  • Beware the Double-Dose Poison Approach to Treating Cancer

Beware the Double-Dose Poison Approach to Treating Cancer

Recently, scientists across the U.S. paired all different variations of the 100 approved cancer drugs into 5,000 drug combinations. The goal was to find a two-drug combo more effective than any single drug. Since the agents tested were already approved for use by patients, the hope was that any promising new combinations could quickly be brought to market.

The scientists involved called this approach "the first systematic characterization of approved drugs in a large number of cancer cell lines." I’d call it something else. . .

    The secret to curing cancer:
You’ve been throwing it in the trash!

In 1921, a British doctor discovered that members of a remote native tribe were almost totally cancer-free. But when members of this tribe move away from their native land and change their diet, they get cancer just like anyone else.

It’s all thanks to a food most of us throw away as waste — a food that’s rich in amygdalin — what most of us call Laetrile.

Click here now and watch a video presentation about this cancer breakthrough. One cancer expert calls this overlooked food "the key to curing AND preventing cancer" — and you can benefit now — without going to a doctor or buying expensive supplements. This little throwaway food tastes great. Bill Clinton, of all people, eats a certain amygdalin-rich food all the time, and so can you. Click here now to watch the video!

I prefer Bill Frezza’s interpretation, a writer for Bio-IT World. He called it "curing cancer by throwing spaghetti at the wall."

Latest generation of medicines: Stuck in the mud

The rationale behind this barbaric search for a better poison is that the agents in use already have FDA approval as individual drugs. So combining them to see if they make a miracle union is a lot cheaper and quicker than actually taking the time to come up with a new, truly effective drug.

They’ve got plenty to work with. The FDA approved an unprecedented 31 new cancer drugs this year. In 2011, the agency approved 30 drugs, marking a seven-year high. But it’s rare these drugs bring any kind of real breakthrough, like we saw with tamoxifen — and that was way back in the 1960s.

Hoping for a quick-fix instead of putting in the effort to do things right is exactly what you never want to see in healthcare. The authorities who control the billions of dollars in cancer research are out of ideas.

Even worse is that some of these combinations can be so toxic, it’s only safe to administer them in tiny doses that might not be effective. You see, the experiments that tested 5,000 possible cancer drug combinations were performed in the lab on cancer cell lines.

Doctors may not be able to use the resulting combos on real humans because they’re deadly to the patient as well as to the cancer. When you put together two toxic cancer drugs you get a double-dose of poison.

What we need is a medical establishment that diversifies its strategy beyond the exhausted drugs we know don’t work. The National Institutes of Health even has something called an R21 Exploratory grant, intended to finance research into alternative treatments. But, according to Bill Frezza, that money appears to be too tied up in the Good-Buddies club of established researchers who peer-review and vote to fund their colleagues’ projects more often than they give a grant to any innovative new researcher’s ideas.

Yes, the precious "War on Cancer" taxpayer dollars are parceled out to the pals of people in power.

    The Band-Aid approach

Medical research on traditional chemotherapy has stalled. We’re not the only ones who see it. In a recent meeting of 100 cancer specialists at the World Oncology Forum in Switzerland, experts at least agreed on one thing: urgent action is needed. Not only are we lacking in innovative approaches, but cancer rates are rising both in the developed world and in poor countries.

It wasn’t long ago that they thought designer medicines built to interfere with tumor growth and suppression would make all the difference. Instead, those treatments only buy patients a month or two of life, and any excitement in the medical establishment quickly wanes.

Just look at vemurafenib, a BRAF-inhibitor that melted tumors associated with malignant melanomas in only two weeks. Six months later, the cancer would come back, often stronger than before. Or Tarceva (for lung cancer), Avastin (for breast and colorectal cancer), Sutent (for renal cell carcinoma). All prompted great expectations but brought disappointment.

What bothers me is that medical pundits say the future is in combining these drugs together, and exploring combinations between both new and old drugs. But instead of investing their energy in working out the cause of cancer, their biggest concern is that mixing drugs will be radically expensive. They’ve directed their focus to regulation and funding, instead of true innovation.

Granted, cancer and money are inseparable. Americans spent over $23 billion last year on cancer drugs. Treating cancer has never come cheap, but now the cost of every new treatment seems to eclipse the ones that came before it. In spite of their hefty price tags, those drugs continue to overpromise and under-deliver.

You call this a War on Cancer?

It’s bad enough that this approach is like putting on a blindfold and trying to hit a moving target. But my real beef with the issue is that it’s got nothing to do with actually curing cancer.

Sure, the mixologists in the lab world might come up with a concoction that extends survival by an extra month or two. Some patients will choose the misery of chemo to gain those extra weeks.

But better than that would be a cure. After 40 years and billions of dollars, you’d think we’d be further along.

The question that remains, is what can we do about it? I believe the alternative treatments we talk about in this newsletter and in our books and reports are more promising than conventional chemotherapy.

For late stage cancer, chemotherapy buys a few extra weeks or months (and sometimes not even that; the data are often manipulated to make it look like patients last a little longer on these drugs than do patients who don’t receive them.) Meanwhile, my colleagues and I have seen and talked to people who gained years of life and sometimes complete remission thanks to alternative cancer treatments. And they did it without sickness, nausea, hair loss, "chemo brain," or the destruction of their immune systems that chemo brings.

Even for early stage cancer, where conventional treatments are more successful, my first choice would be alternatives.

One of the things you can do right now to improve your health, whether you have cancer or not, is to avoid the toxic chemicals found in processed foods. Our last issue covered the most deadly food additive of all. If you missed this important info, you can scroll down and read it now.

    The Blood Pressure Lie EXPOSED!

If you’ve been told you have high blood pressure, you’re probably scared to death.

It is called "the silent killer."

With a name like that, it has to scare you.

And, if that’s not scary enough, you were probably told to start taking a blood pressure drug immediately.

But, that wasn’t all, was it? I bet you had to go and see a cardiologist next.

And, did the cardiologist tell you that if one drug didn’t bring your pressure down, you might have to take a second drug at the same time? Often, there’s even a third drug.

I know how the system works. I’ve been fighting against it for you for almost 30 years.

And, I know you don’t want to be part of that group who’s taking blood pressure medication for the rest of their lives.

So I’ll let you in on a little secret…

It’s a safe guess that every American man, woman, and child has consumed aspartame at one time or another. More than 250 million people drink beverages containing this deadly chemical because they actually think it’s a healthy choice!

The facts say otherwise: these people are boosting their cancer risk far beyond anything you’d imagine. It’s proven by a new study released by Harvard and then almost immediately scrubbed from the Internet. It appears that powerful interests want to protect aspartame from any criticism.

The dreadful consequences of a "safe" food choice

This mega-study revealed some downright frightening results. As little as one diet soda a day leads to:

    • 42% higher leukemia risk (men and women)
    • 102% higher multiple myeloma risk (men only)
    • 31% higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (men only)

Researchers analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study gathered over a 22-year period. It included 77,218 women and 47,810 men, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. That certainly seems like enough data to give us meaningful results.

The study identified over this 22 year period:

    • 1,324 non-Hodgkin lymphomas,
    • 285 multiple myelomas, and
    • 339 cases of leukemia.

Aside from its sheer size (the largest aspartame study ever), this study was particularly thorough in its analysis of aspartame consumption. They evaluated dietary information every two years during the 22 year period, instead of at just one point in time.

And make no mistake… Americans consume a LOT of aspartame — 10.5 million pounds per year — eighty-six percent of which is from diet soda.

Previous studies — slammed by critics —
    were absolutely right

Several studies over a period of years found a link between aspartame consumption and cancer. But they were often criticized as too small, too short, or poorly constructed.

This study puts those doubts to rest.

And the results are not exactly surprising. But they are disturbing. Consider what we already new before this large-scale human study was released. . .

One previous rat study found that of 48 experimental rats, up to 67% of all female rats developed golf ball sized (or larger) tumors. And 21% of the males developed similar cancerous growths.

An Italian study connected aspartame intake to lymphomas, leukemia, and kidney cancer. This study confirmed aspartame as a carcinogen affecting multiple sites in both rats (males and females) and mice (males only).1

"The truth isn’t sweet when it
    comes to artificial sweeteners."

So screamed the headline of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School) press release about a link between aspartame and cancers, especially blood cancers. Then suddenly they got cold feet and scrubbed the story.

They also issued an "apology", stating that the data were "too weak to find a causal link".

None of this is too surprising. If it becomes established that aspartame causes cancer, it could be equivalent to the long-running scandals over tobacco or asbestos. Can you imagine the frenzy of litigation against food and beverage makers? The lawsuits will never end.

    Don’t ignore a 22-year study of 125,000+ people

Don’t take a chance and ignore a large-scale, long-term study like this one that shows a link between aspartame and blood cancers.

The long-term aspect is critically important, because one of the tricks industry uses to hide product toxicity is short term tests. Short-term studies reveal nothing about long-term risks. Based solely on short-term trials, the industry can get away with claiming aspartame is one of the most studied food additives ever, with no health concerns. And it’s all blessed by the FDA.

The reality is they never study the long-term effects, and those remain largely unknown till a product has been on the market for years — even decades — and the horrible consequences start showing up.

As proof of that, shortly after the release and retraction of the Harvard study, the beverage industry quickly stated that aspartame has been "deemed safe for decades by the world’s leading toxicologists".

Unfortunately, most people don’t know how short and poorly designed these industry-funded studies are, and the media choose not to tell you. So it’s easy to be deceived.

Well-guarded secrets of a scary molecule

Aspartame is the name of the active ingredient in artificial sweeteners like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure.

It was accidentally discovered in 1965 when James Schlatter, chemist for the G. D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

It turned out his discovery is some 200 times sweeter than table sugar, and was approved for dry foods in 1981 and carbonated beverages in 1983. Now get this: Already in the 1960s aspartame was labeled a dangerous chemical and shown to create holes in brain tissue and to cause brain and nerve damage in developing fetuses. But wait, there’s more: Researchers also knew it causes cancer, migraines, headaches, seizures, convulsions, and even retinal damage.

Anything this dangerous should have been removed from the market many years ago!

It actually was removed for a time after initial approval, when Dr. John Olney of the Washington School of Medicine discovered that aspartic acid — a major aspartame ingredient — caused holes in the brains of animal subjects.

There’s a whole long and sordid story to be told about questionable lab practices, an FDA grand jury investigation of studies and more, but space prohibits its telling here and now. Interestingly, one of the government’s prosecuting attorneys later joined the law firm representing Searle.

Don’t trust the FDA to protect your health…

One can only guess about the political shenanigans involved in gaining approval for aspartame.

Finally, after the FDA received over 8,000 complaints about NutraSweet’s side effects, a list of possible side effects was made public. Besides cancer and tumors, including brain cancer, aspartame is linked to a long laundry list of problems. I won’t list them all here, but if you or a loved one suffer any symptoms or vexing health issues that won’t resolve, it may be worth examining your diet for hidden aspartame.

Be forewarned, to this day the FDA still denies a cancer link. By the time they admit it (if ever), it will be too late for you.

Many chronic conditions are linked to aspartame:

    • Memory loss
    • Alzheimer’s disease
    • Dementia
    • Brain lesions
    • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
    • ALS
    • Parkinson’s disease
    • Epilepsy
    • Hearing loss and vision problems

We can hardly overstate the risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with chronic health conditions. The book Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame as a "chemical poison". I’ll show you in a moment just how true that is.

But first, the acute conditions in the following list may also be linked to aspartame. Take a look and see if any of these shoes fit your feet. . .

    • Hallucinations
    • Infertility
    • Diarrhea
    • Seizures
    • Depression
    • Migraine and headaches
    • Fatigue (blocks glucose from entering brain)
    • Insomnia
    • Nausea and abdominal pain
    • Sleep problems
    • Asthma and chest tightness
    • Heart palpitations
    • Weight gain
    • Rashes

Many of these conditions can also lead to early death.

    Danger: brain damage ahead…

Aspartame is comprised of three chemicals — aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol.

Aspartic acid, an amino acid also called aspartate, is a neurotransmitter in your brain.
Its big problems come when taken in free form (not bound to proteins).

Aspartate slowly destroys your neurons. Seventy-five percent of the neural cells in one area of your brain can be killed before you show any clinical symptoms of chronic illness. No wonder one key complaint from aspartame use is memory loss!

Dr. Russell Blaylock, leading neurologist and neurosurgery professor at the Medical University of Mississippi, published an entire book detailing the damage caused by aspartate. He uses 500 scientific references to show the link to serious chronic neurological disorders.

Phenylalanine is also an amino acid. Diet soda must carry a label warning people with phenylketonuria (PKU) not to drink it, because they cannot metabolize phenylalanine. But even those without PKU can experience a dangerous buildup of phenylalanine — leading to plummeting serotonin levels, depression, anxiety, and violent rages.

One especially alarming account of the effects of spiked phenylalanine levels was documented in the Wednesday Journal article, "An Aspartame Nightmare." John Cook drank six to eight diet drinks daily.

His symptoms began with memory loss and frequent headaches, and then moved to violent rages and severe mood swings. He didn’t have PKU, yet a blood test showed a phenylalanine level of 80 mg/dl. (Safe levels of phenylalanine are under 10 mg/dl.) He also showed brain damage and abnormal brain function.

When he cut aspartame from his diet, his symptoms improved.

Methanol (aka wood alcohol) is a deadly poison. You may have heard of methanol as the poison that causes some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead.

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in your body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin and a known carcinogen. It also causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects.

Even the EPA calls methanol "a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion." EPA recommends a limit of 7.8 mg/day, yet a one-liter beverage (or 3 cans of diet soda) contains 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users may consume up to 250 mg per day — a staggering 32 times the EPA limit.

More dangerous for people than for test animals

Due to your lack of a couple key enzymes that digest methanol — enzymes that lab animals have but you don’t — you’re much more sensitive to its toxins than animals.

In humans, ,methanol converts to formaldehyde via an enzyme called ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase). This enzyme is more active in men than in women, which may explain the association between diet soda consumption and higher lymphoma and multiple myeloma in men, but not women.

Methanol absorption spikes when heated to 86 degrees. This may occur when a product is improperly stored (diet drinks sitting in hot sun), or as part of a food product such as Jello.

Another byproduct of aspartame is Diketopiperazine (DKP), implicated in brain tumors. Olney noted that DKP in the gut produces a powerful brain-tumor-causing chemical.

DKP is also implicated as a cause of uterine polyps and blood cholesterol by FDA toxicologist Dr. Jacqueline Verrett (in her testimony before the U.S. Senate).

Don’t drink it or eat it,
no matter how safe they claim it is!

Don’t believe the party line about aspartame safety. Avoid all products that contain it. I eat almost no processed or manufactured foods myself, and I don’t drink sodas at all, regular or diet. If you give up aspartame-sweetened sodas, for heaven’s sake don’t go back to the ones with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. They’re even worse.

And it’s not all about sodas. Considering that aspartame is hidden in 6,000 products*, check out the footnote below for a list. Aspartame is in a great many consumer items you might not think of, such as children’s Tylenol, certain vitamins, laxatives (Metamucil), pharmaceuticals**…

It pays to become an astute label reader and questioner!

Janet Starr Hull, who holds a doctorate in nutrition, says about the latest aspartame reports,

I will never accept the news of aspartame safety. I think it is a ‘business’ decision to discredit/discount the research results that aspartame DOES cause cancer, major nerve disorders, birth defects, and brain imbalances. Think about it… can you imagine the chaos that will occur when the truth of aspartame dangers is accredited…

Perhaps you’re thinking it’s worth the risk of cancer to keep your weight down? Don’t count on it. There’s evidence that aspartame causes people to gain weight, not lose it!

    * Foods besides soda which may contain aspartame:

    • Mints, chewing gum, hard candies, soft candy chews
    • Flavored syrups for coffee, flavored water products
    • Frozen ice cream, ice cream novelties and frozen ice, ice cream toppings
    • Fruit spreads, jams/jellies
    • Jell-O and pudding
    • Iced tea powder and ready to drink, instant cocoa mix
    • Juice blends and drinks
    • Mousse
    • Syrups
    • Meal replacements, protein nutritional shakes, protein and nutritional bars,
    • "No sugar added" and "Sugar Free" — any food!
    • Veggie drinks
    • Yogurt — drinkable, fat free, sugar free

** See this link for a list of OTC and prescription drugs containing aspartame: http://suewidemark.com/asparmeds.htm

        You get the idea.

There may not be multi-million dollar studies going on regarding this approach, but believe me — it’s more effective than trusting your health to experimental science.

Here’s another good reason for you to
    EAT YOUR VEGETABLES!

According to research published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, a plant nutrient called sulforaphane is highly selective in its battle against cancer.

Unlike traditional chemotherapy drugs, this nutrient has been shown to target and destroy prostate, breast and other cancer cells—while leaving healthy cells untouched! You don’t want to miss this natural miracle from the produce section. . .

    Continued below. . .

    Video of the Week:

"Shocking Confessions of a Drug Company Insider"

In this exposé, a top executive of a major pharmaceutical company spills the naked truth about the drugs you and your family take… which drugs heal, and which ones KILL… what doctors turn to when they don’t know the cure… what they do when they themselves or their loved ones are stricken with disease or illness… what life-saving resource they insist should be in every home. Watch this must-see video now because your life — or the life of your loved ones — may depend on it.

Sulforaphane is part of the group of compounds called isothiocyanates (ITC). These compounds are ABUNDANT in broccoli and other cruiciferous vegetables such as:

    • Brussels sprouts
    • Cabbage
    • Cauliflower
    • Collard and kale greens
    • Radish
    • Turnips
    • Watercress

These vegetables don’t contain a dusting of ITCs on their skins! You have to actually chew or chop them to break down their cell membranes.

This brings their sulfur-containing chemicals in contact with certain enzymes that occur in the vegetables themselves AND in your own digestive tract. These enzymes are essential to releasing the sulforaphane/ITC nutrient. Without the enzymes, it doesn’t matter how much broccoli and cabbage you eat.

Some folks prefer to cook their vegetables to help get ’em down the hatch. But you should know that the greatest cancer-fighting benefits come with eating them raw.

This is because cooking at high heat will deactivate the enzyme that helps produce cancer-killing ITCs! Raw or lightly cooked vegetables will deliver the greatest health benefits.

If you don’t know about enzymes, it’s time you did! Everyone needs to take them as supplements AND eat enzyme-rich foods as well. Enzymes are every bit as important as vitamins and minerals. I wrote the book on this subject, called The Missing Ingredient for Good Health.

Like many plants, cruciferous vegetables are rich in the very enzymes you need to digest them. Besides sulforaphane, they’re also rich in vitamins A, C, and K, and in other compounds that help make them mean, green cancer-fighting machines.

Vitamin K is a wonder all by itself. I take it as a supplement in addition to eating large amounts of broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower and watercress (watercress is a super addition to a salad). I could go on for a very long time about all the natural "medicines" in cruciferous vegetables, but let me get back to sulforaphane.

Exactly how does it work its magic against cancer? Well, numerous study results show that this health defender carries out…

A multi-pronged attack against deadly cancer cells!

Essentially, sulforaphane uses several highly effective strategies to protect you from cancer. This includes actions that:

    • Block damaging enzyme reactions—sulforaphane blocks phase 1 enyzmes that can activate carcinogens in your body
    • Inhibit cancer cell growth—cancer cells grow and multiply quickly until they get a dose of sulforaphane; it has a unique ability to shut ’em down
    • Promote cancer cell suicide—not only does it stop them from growing, but sulforaphane also induces apoptosis (natural cell death) in various types of cancer cells
    • Rev up beneficial enzyme action—increasing phase 2 antioxidant enzymes helps reduce harmful inflammation that can promote cancer cell growth and prevent apoptosis

Sulforaphane also provides protection against several types of bacteria, including E.Coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus.

Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties have many folks interested in using sulforaphane as a topical cosmetic.

        It’s a wonder drug in a plant — and you don’t need a prescription.

Now this isn’t pie-in-the-sky fantasy! These conclusions come from documented clinical research and observation.

Respected physician and medical writer, Dr. Ray Sahelian endorses sulforaphane as a product that can help detoxify your body and protect against a variety of cancers.

Dr. Sahelian’s website cites numerous scientific studies that prove its healthful benefits.

Here’s what some studies have shown so far…

Scientists have noted amazing results when studying the inhibiting effects of sulforaphane on chemically-induced cancers in a variety of animal studies.

Here are just a few examples:

    • Breast—researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center studied mice with breast cancer to document the number of cancer stem cells in breast tumors. They injected the mice with different concentrations of sulforaphane. The investigators found that sulforaphane 1) significantly reduced the number of cancer stem cells, 2) left ordinary cells unharmed, and 3) stopped breast cancer cells from producing new tumors
    • Colon —investigators at the State University of New Jersey found that mice given a diet supplemented with sulforaphane for three weeks developed significantly fewer and smaller polyps in their small intestines
    • Lung—Beijing University scientists found that 9 days after implanting tumor cells in the lungs of mice, those treated with sulforaphane injections had tumors weighing more than 70 percent less than those in control mice!
    • Prostate—2011 studies concluded by scientists in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University demonstrated that sulforaphane selectively targeted cancerous prostate cells and left normal cells unharmed

This is merely a sampling of the many positive anti-cancer properties of this powerhouse broccoli nutrient. Research teams are continuing to monitor human clinical trials and animal studies for additional evidence.

So are YOU convinced that broccoli and its cousins are one of Mother Nature’s kick-butt cancer cures?

The evidence abundantly shows this to be true. But no one expects you to develop an overnight fondness for this group of vegetables. Whatever the reason, many folks just can’t stomach the idea of chomping on broccoli. The first President Bush famously announced he refused to eat it. I can’t stand Brussels sprouts myself.

The good news is some manufacturers have developed supplements that extract the healthy sulforaphane from vegetables and make it available in pill form.

So if broccoli, cauliflower, kale and turnips just don’t appeal to you—you can still benefit from their anti-cancer strength without holding your nose before each bite!

Meanwhile, we wrote about something so interesting in the last issue, I want to make sure you didn’t miss it. It’s about the effect our thoughts have on our health — and how just thinking you’re being cured can cause you to get well. Scroll down and take a look.

Has Your Doctor Ever Fooled You
    with Fake Medicines?

You go see your doctor and he writes you a prescription…

You fill it, pay for it, bill it to insurance, and take it as prescribed. Several months later, you realize the pills aren’t doing a thing for you.

So did your doctor misdiagnose you — or lie to you?

The truth is darker than you may imagine…

    Continued below. . .

    Hidden epidemic picking off
    Baby Boomers in their prime

Leg cramps that wake you up out of a sound sleep.

Fingers so cold you’re embarrassed to shake hands at church.

Unsightly circles under your eyes–no matter how much sleep you get.

Bruises that appear after the slightest bump…and take WEEKS to go away.

These aren’t just minor annoyances. They’re the first signs of the hidden epidemic picking off Baby Boomers like flies. So deadly, it claims another new victim every 30 seconds. And yet–most M.D.s are completely overlooking it.

Which is why it’s absolutely critical for you to watch this special presentation right now. It will tell you everything you need to know about this sweeping threat. Including the solution so stunningly simple, it puts modern medicine to shame. Please, don’t miss it.

If your doctor prescribed "Obecalp" or "Cebocap" to calm your headache, reduce your stomach upset, or relieve your pain… did it help?

        Probably not.

Obecalp and Cebocap are placebos — a fancy name for a fake drug. Obecalp is "placebo" spelled backwards. "Cebocap" is a pill made from sugar.

Does your doctor pass this off as real medicine?

This isn’t exactly new news, but that doesn’t make it any less disturbing.

An international survey reported that more than half of all doctors in the U.S. regularly prescribe placebos to their patients — without telling them, of course.

Ditto for doctors in England, Israel, New Zealand, Sweden, and Denmark.

A study of all Chicago area primary care doctors saw 45% of them admit they prescribed placebos for their patients.

So, how do they manage to dismiss their patients with the brush of a hand and a fake med?

    • 34% introduce placebos to the patient as "a substance that may help and will not hurt" (technically, this is true; many people do experience relief from placebos)
    • 19% said, "It is medication."
    • (Only) 9% called it a placebo.

One-third of doctors gave their patients other info such as, "This may help you but I am not sure how it works."

Your doctor may even think you’re the fake

Doctors admit to prescribing placebos to try to find out who’s faking their symptoms, or who’s a hypochondriac.

This is worse than ironic — you doctor lies to you to see if you’re lying.

The doctor might say something like, "This is a medicine not typically used for your condition but [that] might benefit you." It sounds like an off-label use of a prescription drug, but it’s a placebo.

This is particularly common for pain med prescriptions. The chronic pain disorder fibromyalgia has had doctors baffled and flustered for years because many of them think it’s psychosomatic (i.e. it’s all in your head). So they prescribe dummy pills and send the patient off into the wild blue yonder.

Shockingly, a recent study in the British Medical Journal showed that nearly two-thirds of all doctors thought it was permissible to give fake medicine without telling you.

The website HealthDay quotes a Stanford psychiatrist as saying, "The basic rule is: First, do no harm. If there is no toxicity and it does some good, evidence supports its use… You can tell people that the treatment might benefit them."

    Your doctor’s hired accomplice

Not surprisingly, your doctor could never pull this off without a willing accomplice. And they have just the partner they need — your pharmacy. And behind them, the major drug companies.

Can fake meds really be prescribed and purchased from your local pharmacy? You bet! CVS, Walgreens and others have them listed.

With half the doctors pushing fake meds and using pharmacies as their accomplices you have to wonder — has YOUR doctor done this to you?

This atmosphere of distrust between doctors and their patients exposes an insidious problem in Western medicine. Wouldn’t you rather your doctor told you he had to do a little more research and get back to you about an issue, instead of just telling you to pop a sugar pill?

Maybe we should ask our doctors about their thoughts on these issues…

    • How do they expect your health to improve with fake sugar pills?
    • Does absence of toxicity justify them lying to you?
    • If your doctor can’t diagnose your problem, does he default to thinking your symptoms are in your head?
    • What if you really are having a heart attack but get sent home with a fake prescription?
    • Are they liable for malpractice if they misdiagnose or fail to diagnose, and you die?

In my opinion, placebo prescriptions are a medical cop-out, and do nothing to help trust between doctors and patients.

True, sometimes they help a patient. But whether real or imagined, pain is pain, and ALL symptoms should be looked into… not just cast aside as inconsequential or all in the head.

        But as I said…

    Some placebos really help patients

Even when no real medicine is consumed, some patients feel better. Their pain or symptoms do go away.

In carefully controlled studies with placebos as a control, certain patients progress just because they think they’re getting real medicine.

That’s why "the placebo effect" is now front and center in discussions on the mind-body connection popularized by Eastern medicine. Even many adherents of Western medicine are starting to embrace the mind-body connection for its therapeutic value.

I love one study we came across: Researchers gave runners tap water, claiming it was oxygenated. The runners with this "special" water ran faster and longer than their counterparts.

Does that make the "placebo effect" legit?

An estimated one third of all people can improve via the placebo effect…

Studies now show that sugar pills work as well as antidepressants to beat depression. And with far fewer side effects!

Even sham knee surgery was equal to the real thing! In this rare surgery-related placebo study, 180 participants were randomly assigned to have arthroscopic surgery for osteoarthritis, or sham surgery with incisions.

Tests of knee function showed that those who had the placebo surgery reported feeling just as good as those getting the real operation. While the surgery worked for many people, the sham did also.1

Upon discovering these startling results, one of the doctors involved said, "I hate to tell you this, but surgery may have the biggest placebo effect of all."

This is rather amazing testimony to the power of your thoughts to bring about healing changes in your body. Just think how much money you’ll save replacing a $5,000 surgery with your brain’s healing power!

In fact, brain scans do suggest the placebo effect is the work of endorphins — your body’s natural pain killers.

But some people experience the opposite. . .

Sometimes you get the reverse effect — unpleasant "side effects" like headaches, nervousness, nausea, or constipation, to name a few. The improvement is called the "placebo effect". The reverse is the "nocebo effect".

Researchers think the nocebo effect can be partially explained by a substance that sends messages through your nerves to your brain. When you’re anxious, this substance is activated, making you feel more pain than someone who’s calm.

The resulting nocebo effect shows up in brain scans too. Brain imaging studies suggest your pain is more intense when you expect more pain versus if you expect less pain.

Together they comprise the expectation effect… what you expect will happen. You expect to feel better, so you do. Or you get this giant pill and imagine it’s a very strong medicine, so you get "side effects".

I find it very easy to understand the nocebo effect because I’ve experienced side effects from quite a few drugs and supplements. The most common for me are feeling hyper and having trouble sleeping. So I tend to be nervous and to anticipate a problem when trying a new supplement, and my fears may bring on the problem.

In controlled studies ALL drugs and supplements induce side effects in some of the participants. The most common side effect is stomach or intestinal upset. I suspect that in most cases it’s all in the patient’s head — the result of feeling nervous or apprehensive about taking a substance.

    Conventional medicine and placebos

According to the medical literature, placebos do not cure, at least permanently. In fact, the placebo effect doesn’t last very long for most patients, and they go back to experiencing the same symptoms that got them to go to the doctor in the first place. (Yet doctors willingly lie with placebos on the grounds that they "help." Hmmm…I guess short term relief is better than none.)

In studies on tumor shrinkage, placebos seem to have little or no effect (conventionally speaking)… but may still offer symptomatic relief, calm the patient’s anxiety, reduce pain, and improve sleep.

Some people think placebos work because certain illnesses improve over time without treatment. Or maybe people take better care of themselves while they think they’re receiving a doctor’s care…

    Can "remembered wellness" heal you?

Certain research shows your brain may also respond to an imagined scene as it would to something actually seen. Your imagination may help you recall a time before symptoms, evoking a chemical change — a theory called remembered wellness.2

Some doctors call alternative therapies placebos. In reality, what you believe in can help for awhile and sometimes for a long while.

Certain health problems may also improve on their own — including the so-called Stage Zero Breast Cancer.

So, can you talk yourself into getting well?

Some people get the placebo effect without any pills, shots, or procedures, just by visiting someone they think can help.

Incredibly, scientists now believe patients can benefit from sham drugs even when they’re told there are no active ingredients in them. Meaning doctors can skip the deceit.

To test these limits, Harvard Medical School ran a test3

They divided 80 patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) into two groups — one received no treatment and the other got dummy pills twice a day.

The "dummy pill" group was explicitly told:

    • They were getting placebo pills with no active ingredient (sugar pills)…
    • That these pills were clinically proven to give significant improvement in IBS symptoms through the mind-body self-healing process…
    • That they didn’t have to believe in placebo effect at all — just take the pills…

And the word "placebo" was even printed on the bottle!

The patients were monitored for three weeks. Here are the amazing results, published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE.

    • The placebo group experienced improvement both at the midpoint and end point compared to the non-treatment group.
    • By the end point, nearly twice as many placebo patients had adequate symptom relief compared to the non-treated group.
    • Patients in the placebo group doubled their average rate of improvement compared to those given the most powerful IBS medications.

The researchers were surprised and encouraged, and hope it’ll discourage deception in clinical practice. However, they also warn that more study is necessary due to limitations in the size and length of this study.

Lead author Prof. Ted Kaptchuk says, "…these findings suggest that rather than mere positive thinking, there may be significant benefit to the very performance of medical ritual… Placebo may work even if patients know it is a placebo." (Emphasis mine.)

Makes me think of primitive shamans or medicine men or "witch doctors": just performing an elaborate ritual can make a patient feel better.

    The bottom line

The mind-body connection and the placebo effect are hot topics in medicine today. As for hard and fast answers, we’re not there yet. But still, here’s what you can do today:

    1. Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. Your brain is very powerful, and just because we don’t know "everything" doesn’t mean a placebo can’t work for you. However…
    2. Your key strategy is always to stay as healthy as possible so you don’t need the placebo. Eat organic raw foods daily, exercise 30 minutes a day, slash stress… and all the basics you’ve heard before. Oh, wait! Maybe those are all placebos. . .
    3. If your doctor prescribes medicine, ask if it’s a placebo. Look it up online or in the Physicians’ Desk Reference to be sure it’s "real". Then ask your pharmacist if it’s a placebo. This isn’t a carte blanche approval for prescription meds, but a plug for honesty in medicine.
    4. Become a better informed medical consumer. Aggressively research and evaluate your own medical care — or find a trusted person to help you. No one cares more about your health than you do. Not even your doctor!

You fill it, pay for it, bill it to insurance, and take it as prescribed. Several months later, you realize the pills aren’t doing a thing for you.

So did your doctor misdiagnose you — or lie to you?

The truth is darker than you may imagine…

    So You Have Cancer.
    What’s the Next Step?

Most people are at sea when they get a cancer diagnosis. It’s no wonder. Cancer is a completely life-changing experience.

An avalanche of questions begins almost as soon as you’re told you have it. Where should you go for treatment advice? Who should you trust? What can you even afford? What works? What’s proven? What natural alternatives do you have? Glad you asked. I have a few ideas about where to go for answers. . .

The Best Cancer Treatment on Earth
    Just Got Better!

Hi. I’m Lee Euler, the editor of Cancer Defeated. On a recent tour of top cancer clinics with my colleague Andrew Scholberg, we learned about some remarkable new cancer treatments. In spite of all the information we already knew, these treatments were brand new to us. They’re important discoveries.

    • A maverick doctor cured his last four "terminal" brain cancer patients, using laser blood therapy developed to keep Russian cosmonauts healthy in space. That’s right: four out of four patients got well.
    • Several of the doctors we interviewed told us about a new cure for prostate cancer. It takes only one week — and no surgery or drugs are required. If I had prostate cancer, this treatment would absolutely be my first choice. It gets rid of enlarged prostate too – totally, in just one week!
    • A painless treatment for liver cancer has cured more than 300 patients. When it first came to light decades ago, the New York Times reported that this revolutionary procedure may have "solved the cancer problem"! Yet it disappeared and conventional doctors don’t know about it. Now it’s been rediscovered at one of the top clinics we visited, and it’s working cancer miracles. You need to know about the handful of maverick doctors who offer it.

Is there such a thing as too much health responsibility?

I started thinking about the question "What do you do first?" after seeing recent research on women with early-stage breast cancer. More than one in five felt they had too much responsibility for treatment-related decisions. The study also said those women were more likely to end up regretting the treatment choices they made.

There are a couple issues at play here. First, there’s our cultural hang-up where doctors are seen as gods and medical technology is miraculous, even though that’s hardly the case. I’ll concede that most doctors are truly committed to healing, and our medical technology is remarkable.

But taking charge of your own health is still critical. No one’s going to hold your hand and walk you through every possibility out there. At least, no one in the modern medical system. As nice as it might seem to hand off all the decision-making to an expert, that’s just not an option with cancer.

There’s also the problem that money and power have too much influence within the medical system. So even if your doctor has the best intentions, he may have been courted (and bribed) for so long by Big Pharma that his perspective is distorted. I’ve written in these pages how many oncologists make most of their money from marking up the chemotherapy drugs, not from the actual services they provide.

So the first thing to do is roll up your sleeves and start learning.

After that, you need someone who advocates your right to choose your treatment. And then you need to put your treatment plan into action.

    Here’s what I recommend …

Now more than ever, doctors are able to tailor their treatment recommendations to individual patients. That’s especially true of alternative treatments, where there’s a dazzling variety of treatments that work.

Just as there’s no textbook cancer case, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all treatment. So here’s what I recommend by way of cancer health literacy:

    1. Make it your number one priority to get better. A cancer diagnosis isn’t the time to play the blame-game with yourself, or anyone else. Just focus on healing.
    2. Pick some trusted sources where you can learn more about the disease. If you start searching for cancer info on the Internet, you’re bound to scare yourself into a panic that won’t do a bit of good in the long run. I recommend our own website, first of all: www.CancerDefeated.com. Also good are www.CancerTutor.com, created by my friend Webster Kehr, and Bill Henderson’s site, www.beating-cancer-gently.com. All three have large, searchable databases of valuable free information. I also recommend the nonprofit www.cancercontrolsociety.com.
    3. Choose an advocate. And never see the doctor without your advocate. He or she is your best friend in your fight against cancer (even if you have to pay them!)Your main job is to get well. It takes a lot of energy to filter information and weigh the pros and cons of different treatment options. Rely on someone else to support you and help you navigate the complicated medical system. Your spouse or a close friend are good choices, or you might turn to a neighbor or even a paid advocate. Whomever you choose, make sure you’re comfortable bringing this person to doctor’s appointments with you.
    4. If you don’t feel up to making all the decisions, it’s fine to choose the right medical provider for you and THEN give that person a lot of decision-making responsibility. But even then you have to choose the provider for yourself. And believe me, it had better be an informed choice — NOT the nearest conventional oncologist. Once you’ve found the right doctor, tell him or her how much responsibility you’re comfortable taking. You’ll have fewer regrets later on.
    5. Get rid of whatever is causing stress in your life — and be ruthless about it. If you have a boss who thinks you should put in a 70-hour week or an adult child who won’t grow up, now is the time to grow a backbone and tell them you have to put your own needs first. Period. As Ann Landers used to say, "No one can take advantage of you without your permission." This is a good time to stop carrying the whole world on your shoulders.
    6. Learn the details of your diagnosis. Find out the specifics, like the size and location of your cancer. Then ask about treatment options. Don’t hesitate to get a second opinion. Don’t allow yourself to be rushed into chemotherapy or surgery. Frankly, cancer is rarely a rush where every day counts. You’ve got time to think things over and learn about your choices.
    7. There’s a world of difference between late-stage and early-stage cancer. When it comes to late-stage cancer, conventional treatments are a failure for most types of cancer and should be rejected. But for early-stage cancer, conventional chemotherapy, radiation and surgery have a decent success rate, at least with certain kinds of cancer. And of course mainstream medicine’s got the published statistics — the proof, if you will — to tell you how good your chances are. Don’t be shy about asking your doctor to show you the survival stats and what you can expect for the treatment he urges on you. Remember, conventional doctors like to brag about being "evidence-based." So, demand the evidence — or just get online and look it up. In many cases, what they offer the late-stage patient is only a few more weeks or months of life, in horrible discomfort, at great expense. And even that’s doubtful, because often the studies have been manipulated. I’ve talked to people in that situation who turned to alternatives and gained a lot more time (without the misery of chemo). And I’ve also talked to people who got completely well.
    8. I have confidence in alternative treatments and they would be my first choice. For late-stage cancer, alternative medicine is the ONLY option as far as I’m concerned. But just be aware that no one can give you the Las Vegas odds on whether an alternative treatment is going to work. Nobody can tell you whether 10%, 30% or 80% of patients with "X" type of cancer survive more than five years. The evidence is mostly based on case studies — anecdotes. As I’ve written before, a reasonable choice is to have conventional surgery first, to get rid of most of the tumor, but then choose alternatives rather than accept the chemo that your doctors will almost surely push on you.
    9. If you decide on conventional cancer treatment, at least choose an oncologist you feel comfortable with. Someone who listens to your concerns and answers your questions in detail.
    10. Pace yourself. A cancer diagnosis might mean your energy level takes a hit, so be prepared to rest more and cut back on tasks that keep you constantly busy. I recommend a daily nap. Reach out to family and friends. Plenty of studies correlate survival with social contacts. Even a pet can help. You know the saying, "If you want a friend, get a dog."

    "Cancer concierge"

The good news is we’re starting to see models for cancer health literacy cropping up to help sufferers, like the nonprofit service called Connect Inc. that opened recently in Wisconsin. The center is run by sisters Kimberly Demeny and Jennifer Hickey. Demeny’s husband, sadly, passed away from a brain tumor.

The service had been the long-time vision of Demeny, her husband, and their friends and family. The goal is to teach people in their area about available cancer resources so they can make informed decisions about their treatment plans and future quality of life.

The organization helps new patients better understand their cancer diagnosis as well as what treatment options are available. They also provide information about clinical trial results, care standards, second opinions, support groups, and therapy options.

The center even helps cancer patients find help with things like childcare and pet care services, along with incidentals like house cleaning, food delivery, and lawn care. They even locate palliative and hospice care providers when needed.

    Bottom line: You’re in charge

Never just meekly submit to what your conventional doctor tells you to do. It’s a good idea to inform yourself BEFORE you find out you’re sick and go into a panic. Weigh your options with a cool head, ahead of time.

I started this newsletter to inform people about alternatives that few doctors know about — conventional OR alternative. I’ve seen too many of my own loved ones suffer from cancer, and I want to make sure anybody else facing the disease knows about all the promising options out there.

Just remember, it’s up to you to be responsible for your own healthcare decisions. It doesn’t matter how much money you make, how many years in school you finished, or what you’ve done with past health decisions. You deserve to have just as much say in your own cancer treatment as any medical professional.

Meanwhile, one thing you can do ahead of time and ALL the time is to take a certain nutrient whose benefits continue to blow me away every time I look into them. We wrote about it in the last issue, but if you missed it, you can scroll down and read it now.

    Co-enzyme Q10 is Not Just

    For Your Heart Anymore

If you believe in good nutrition you’re probably familiar with co-enzyme Q10, or CoQ10 for short. This is a popular nutritional supplement for folks who want to ensure that their hearts continue to beat longer and stronger.

CoQ10 is actually part of every cell in your body. It works deep inside cell mitochondria — the tiny "energy factories" you have in every cell. CoQ10 helps your cells produce the ATP molecule that is required for muscle contraction — in other words, you can’t move without it.

    Continued below. . .

Cancer Cells Killed by Eating This…

There is a nutrient in your kitchen, right now, that acts like a "smart bomb" against cancer cells.

It’s one of the main phytonutrients in a specific type of food. Researchers are hailing it as a breakthrough that offers real hope for preventing and defeating cancer.

A new research study has shown how it can selectively target and kill cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells alone. The findings are breakthrough for its potential use in cancer prevention and treatment.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also:

    • A natural cholesterol fighter that brings bad levels down 30%;
    • An effective method to lowering your blood pressure without harmful drugs;
    • A fruit that can fight Alzheimer’s Disease;

Dr. Victor Marchione, aka the Food Doctor is revealing this and 16 other amazing “healing foods” in his newest report that you can see here.

And since your heart is an extremely important muscle in your body that contracts all day long for years on end, you can see why CoQ10 supplements would be a natural choice for anyone trying to improve heart health!

When University of Texas cardiologist Dr. Peter Langsjoen used CoQ10 to treat congestive heart failure, he described the improvements he saw in the patients’ health as "nothing short of dramatic."

But long-time readers of this newsletter know it’s more than just a heart supplement. CoQ10 is a potent cancer-fighter, too!

    Even establishment doctors admit
    CoQ10 is the real deal

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant that can help strengthen your immune system and protect your cells from free radical damage.

Even some mainstream medical establishments such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society give this nutrient "two thumbs up" as a first-rate immune system booster. And it’s not often that these groups recommend nutritional solutions.

Because free radicals also can damage your DNA, some researchers have linked these harmful molecules to the development of certain cancers. But ongoing research seems to point to CoQ10 as a free radical’s worst nightmare…

As early as 1961, researchers noted that some cancer patients had lower-than-normal amounts of CoQ10 in their bloodstream. In fact, patients with cancers of the breast, lung, prostate, pancreas, colon, kidney, and head and neck have all been shown to have low blood levels of CoQ10.

Is this just a coincidence? Probably not!

In 1993, University of Texas biochemist Dr. Peter Folkers, PhD, took note of these amazing CoQ10 benefits when he followed six cancer patients who took CoQ10 for congestive heart failure.

When he tracked the progress of the four lung cancer patients and the other two breast cancer patients—he found that ALL of them experienced remissions! Dr. Folkers was convinced that this was due to CoQ10.

And he is not alone in championing the benefits of CoQ10 treatments…

    International studies show CoQ10 provides

    natural chemotherapy benefits!

Although the American medical establishment prefers to push cancer drugs, radiation and surgery as the best cancer treatments—the global scientific community is far more open to researching CoQ10 as a complementary treatment, i.e. a treatment that can be used alongside drugs, radiation, etc.

Researchers have noted that the effects of chemotherapy drugs actually have been strengthened when doctors add CoQ10 as a supplement.

Because chemo drugs are so toxic, doctors have to limit the dosage they can administer. The problem is that high dosage chemotherapy treatments damage both cancerous and healthy cells.

What’s more, chemotherapy can suppress a person’s immune system permanently—leaving the patient open to other harmful and deadly infections.

But international studies are demonstrating the benefits of adding CoQ10 to traditional chemotherapy treatments. Here are some examples from around the world…

    • Italy—researchers treated children with leukemia or lymphoma with either the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin combined with a CoQ10 supplement, or chemo treatment alone. Doxorubicin is known to cause damage to the heart muscle.

Scientists observed that the CoQ10 supplements appeared to provide "a protective effect" on cardiac function.

    • India—a team of biochemical researchers at the Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in Madras conducted studies to prove that CoQ10 and other vitamins could help manage cancer even before chemotherapy was administered. Their studies indicated that CoQ10 prevented healthy cells from undergoing malignant changes.
    • Japan— researchers at the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Tokyo used the deadly chemical azoxymethane to induce colon cancer in rats. Some animals were fed a diet containing CoQ10 while another group received an unsupplemented diet.

When investigators saw first signs of colon cancer, they found that rats who received CoQ10 had less than half the cancers seen in the unsupplemented group. The scientists chalked it up to CoQ10 providing chemopreventive benefits.

    What IS a co-enzyme, anyway?

If you read these articles regularly, you already know I’m a big fan of enzymes. And what’s not to love?

These proteins help jump start many important chemical reactions that help power up your body and sustain your life.

The enzymes in your body increase the pace of these natural chemical reactions to help you:

    • Balance your cholesterol and triglyceride levels
    • Digest foods properly
    • Enhance your brain function
    • Maintain a healthy metabolism
    • Purge unwanted viruses from your bloodstream
    • Shed unwanted pounds
    • And much MORE!

In order to facilitate these reactions, enzymes must attach themselves to molecules (for example, a molecule of an apple you just ate) to "unlock" their energy. In order to get a good fit—a related protein called a co-enzyme steps up to assist.

CoQ10 is the most well-known nutrient in this category. I won’t be surprised if more important co-enzymes are identified in the future.

Get the BEST form of CoQ10

The evidence about CoQ10’s health benefits is convincing. And while investigators continue their studies, you don’t have to wait for this remarkable food to be approved by the medical bosses. You can reap the benefits by taking CoQ10 supplements that are widely available in health food stores and on the Internet.

Ubiquinone is the common form of CoQ10, the one that’s found in most supplements. However, the most powerful form of CoQ10 is ubiquinol. Ubiquinol is more expensive than ubiquinone, but it’s worth it because it packs 8 times the punch.

I’ve heard of heart and cancer patients taking as much as 3,000 mg. of the cheaper ubiquinone to get the desired result. With the more potent ubiquinol you won’t have to do that.

But if you don’t have heart disease or cancer at this time, and you’re strapped for cash, you don’t need 3,000 mg, and the less expensive form of CoQ10 may be just fine.

It certainly can’t hurt to boost your body’s supply of a safe, natural nutrient known to fight dangerous free radicals… protect yourself from mutant cancer cells… and energize your body from the inside out!

    Government Won’t Protect You
    from Environmental Poisons

    Air pollutants from vehicles… pesticides… radiation… military waste sites…

Most people realize these all-too-familiar carcinogens pose a threat to our health.

And even though the government knows it, too—these and many other toxins continue to spread throughout the environment due to neglect by the giant government bureaucracies that “protect” us.

The Secret of Enzymes Plus an Odd Fact:

Most Health Foods are a Waste of Money
    By Lee Euler

You can take vitamins, minerals and antioxidants by the handful and still suffer poor health. Now we know why. Our diets lack a vital food — a type of nutrient that even some alternative doctors don’t know about. I’m talking about enzymes.

Thanks to enzyme supplements, a mother’s lifelong migraines disappeared, and a man with “terminal” kidney cancer was alive and well 15 years later. In fact, a great many cancer patients beat the disease and are still alive today thanks to enzymes.

Enzymes are a key part of most alternative cancer treatment plans. More important: Even if you’re healthy today, taking enzymes is something you can and should do now to prevent not only cancer, but also heart disease, pain and diabetes and many other ailments.

Enzyme supplements are among the top-selling pain-relievers in Germany and they’re even used by the German Olympic team. As for us older folks, research indicates that enzymes improve circulation and can outperform blood-clot and blood-thinning drugs. (Good-bye, warfarin!)

They’ve even helped 9 out of 10 autistic children. A few months back I received a letter from a mother whose 7-year-old autistic son was almost completely cured after she read my Special Report called The Missing Ingredient, and then started giving him enzymes.

This letter came to me out of the blue. The mother wrote, “He has basically been nonverbal until summer 2009, he started talking one day and has never stopped!!” She adds, “The enzymes have kept my 3-year-old son, Noah’s eczema AWAY! We are truly blessed, and I believe our Lord led me to you and your book.”

How can ONE supplement possibly do all this? Just ask yourself: What if you were getting NO vitamins in your diet? You’d be very sick. This nutrient is just as important, and you’re getting almost none, if you’re like the typical American. Click here to learn more.

In a May 2010 report titled “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now”, the President’s Cancer Panel expressed deep concerns that the threat from environmental contaminants is being “grossly underestimated.”

The group denounces government rules that place a greater burden on the American public to prove that environmental exposure to various contaminants is harmful! The rules require overwhelming proof of harm to humans before any corrective action begins.

Lest you think this is merely a partisan issue, please note the panel was formed by President George W. Bush to serve a three-year term. Their report didn’t come out until well into the Obama Administration.

You have NO idea what you may be

    eating, drinking and breathing!

Believe it or not, “the entire U.S. population is exposed on a daily basis to numerous agricultural chemicals,” the report authors stated. Many of these chemicals are known carcinogens.

The report mentioned that “40 chemicals classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as known, probable, or possible human carcinogens” are approved for use as EPA-registered pesticides.

When dangerous chemical pesticides and fertilizers find their way into air, soil and groundwater, they can do some serious health damage.

Farm workers, crop duster pilots and even pesticide manufacturers have been found to have high rates of prostate cancer, skin cancers, and even cancer of the lip.

Exposure to approved pesticide chemicals also has been linked to a variety of cancers affecting body parts including the:

    • Brain/central nervous system
    • Breast
    • Colon
    • Lung
    • Ovaries (of female spouses of exposed workers)
    • Pancreas
    • Testicles

The report cited xylene as an example of an inert ingredient in almost 900 pesticides. This one chemical has been associated with increased risk of brain tumors, leukemia and rectal cancer!

But you can be sure pesticides aren’t the only cancerous chemicals spewing into the air, soil and water…

The high price of modern conveniences…

The President’s Cancer Panel received expert testimony from members representing industrial and manufacturing interests.

Although the list of known or suspect chemicals was too extensive to cover in one report, the panel said numerous chemicals and substances tied to industrial and manufacturing processes are persistent in the environment.

The list includes some familiar villains such as:

    • Asbestos—used to make brake linings, cement pipe, acoustical and thermal insulation; inhaling asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the mesothelium membrane covering most of your internal organs
    • Chromium—used in leather tanning, wood preservation, steel production and other process; exposure to chromium is known to cause lung, nasal, and nasopharyngeal cancers (chromium is needed in small amounts in the diet, but you don’t want to breathe it)
    • Perchloroethylene (PCE) and Trichloroethylene (TCE)—both PCE and TCE are solvents used in the dry cleaning industry. TCE is now used to manufacture adhesives, paint removers, varnishes, paints and lacquers. The report noted that high levels of PCE in drinking water have been associated with elevated breast cancer risk. And TCE has the dubious distinction of being “the most frequently detected organic solvent in groundwater.” This is BAD news considering its possible link to kidney, liver, biliary and cervical cancers!

The report also highlights hazards presented by medical contaminants such as radiation… modern lifestyle toxins such as tobacco smoke and wireless devices… and military hazards such as Agent Orange and nuclear weapons.

If you’re a regular reader of this newsletter or our books and reports, you already know the dangers of many of the substances I’ve mentioned. So what’s the news? The news is that this is the government pointing the finger at itself.

It’s one thing when we fringe crazies try to tell people that food, water, workplace environments, detergents, dry cleaned clothes, and cosmetics are loaded with officially-approved poisons. It’s something else when a panel appointed by the President announces the same thing.

The report leveled sharp criticism at efforts to regulate contaminants in four key areas:

    1. Agricultural
    2. Indoor and outdoor air and water pollution
    3. Industrial
    4. Nuclear fallout, radiation, and electromagnetic fields

The panel said government regulatory efforts are far more “reactionary rather than precautionary” — the Feds wait until considerable damage is done before taking action.

Even more alarming is the panel’s assertion that only a few hundred of the 80,000+ chemicals used in the United States have been tested for safety!

The regulatory system is flawed and failing…

The President’s Cancer Panel was headed up by Dr. LaSalle D. Lefall, Jr., a professor of surgery at Howard University and Margaret Kripke, a professor at University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The 2010 report concluded that government agencies are “failing to carry out their responsibilities” and made recommendations for overhauling the nation’s flawed chemicals management system.

The group identified these five major problems that make regulation of environmental contaminants ineffective:

    • Excessively complex regulations
    • Fragmented and overlapping authorities along with decentralized enforcement
    • Inadequate funding and insufficient staffing
    • Undue industry influence
    • Weak laws and regulations

Lefall and Kripke said these problems cause agency dysfunction and make it difficult to identify and remove hazards.

My private view: There’s a fatal flaw in the whole concept that the government is somehow more fair, more virtuous, and more honest — that it somehow stands independently above the fray and renders impartial judgments while it’s only the private sector that is self-seeking and corrupt.

Government is just another player in the game. It’s not going to look out for you. You have to educate yourself and look out for yourself. The biggest mistake you can make is to outsource your health and safety to the government and the various entities (like the medical profession and the drug companies) that enjoy official approval.

I think the average person walks into a supermarket believing that all the products and all their ingredients have been studied, tested and government-approved. Most people think, “Surely the government wouldn’t let companies sell us foods and personal products that are harmful.” Oh, yes they would.

The public’s fatal belief that everything is being taken care of — actually supports bad practices and makes them possible. It’s provided cover for a massive proliferation of tens of thousands of chemicals without anyone asking questions. Without this touching, naïve faith in regulation, consumers would be more alert and ask more questions.

The day the FDA is abolished (soon, I hope) everyone will realize they have to check out things for themselves, or select health advisors they personally know and trust. In the alternative health field, most of us do that anyway. What’s the big deal?

Meanwhile, with such a variety of toxins bombarding you every day, you might be wondering…

    What should be done
    about environmental carcinogens?

The President’s panel thinks government regulation can somehow be fixed, if everyone tries real hard. The panel made several recommendations for actions that government entities could take to reduce exposure to environmental contaminants.

They recommended first that the President, Congress and responsible agencies such as the EPA adopt a new national cancer prevention strategy focused on primary prevention. Lefall and Kripke said the new approach should set tangible goals for eliminating environmental toxins that can cause cancer.

The group made several other recommendations, including adoption of new workplace chemical exposure assessments, stronger cooperation among agencies, and speedier development of measurement and assessment tools.

As for what YOU can do to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins—the panel suggested these practical actions:

    • Check home radon levels (see Issue #117)
    • Choose foods grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers
    • Drink filtered home, tap or well water (see Issue #85)
    • Remove shoes before entering your home
    • Use a headset with your cell phone and keep calls brief (see Issue #90)

You’ll find a full list of the panel’s recommendations for government, industry and private citizens regarding environmental toxins by accessing the report at http://deainfo.nci.nih.gov/advisory/pcp/annualReports/pcp08-09rpt/PCP_Report_08-09_508.pdf.

In the last issue, we wrote about one contaminant in your food that you can get rid of today! Don’t wait for the government to do something. In fact, the government says it’s safe. If you missed this important news, just scroll down and read it now.

American Beef is Banned in Europe and

Much of the Rest of the World

In 1989 the European Economic Community (EEC) banned hormone-treated U. S. meat, citing dangers of meat treated with sex hormones. This wasn’t a case of typical out-of-control bureaucrats. In fact, European consumers pressured the EEC to take this action on behalf of their health.

Ever since, the US Department of Agriculture has been bullying the EEC on unfair trade practices. American farmers view the meat ban as a flimsy excuse to keep out their products. In this case, I think they’re mistaken. People shouldn’t eat this perverted product, and the Europeans are wise to keep it out.

It’s not just the Europeans who won’t buy American meat. Japan initiated its own ban in 2003. Canada and Australia also refuse our hormone-contaminated meats. The U.S. should join them instead of fighting them. Here’s what this stuff can do to you. . .

3 hidden memory-destroying triggers no one told you about

If your memory is not what it used to be, you may have one or more of these 3 factors. Here’s the latest scientific research on how
to undo the damage, and get your memory back in as little as 30 days.

It’s ironic. Just when you’ve got all this wisdom and experience under your belt, your brain is no longer “old reliable.” You never know
when it’s going to trip you up, frustrate you, embarrass you, or make you wonder if you’re starting to lose your marbles.

Researchers at Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Duke, UCLA, and other top universities recently discovered three hidden triggers that cause frequent
memory lapses and mental decline. They’re the missing link scientists have been seeking for years!

And thanks to a new breakthrough, it’s now possible to switch off these hidden triggers—and even reverse years of brain aging. That means
you can enjoy a “steel trap” memory, crystal-clear thinking, and laser-like focus—in just 30 days or even less.

It all starts with reversing this first hidden trigger…

The EU Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures relating to Public Health (SCVPH) confirmed for the third time in 2002 that the use of hormones as cattle growth promoters poses a health risk, in light of a review of 17 studies and other recent scientific data. The committee found no reason to change its previous opinions of 1999 and 2000.1

The SCVPH concluded there’s a substantial body of evidence that estradiol, a common hormone used to grow American beef, must be considered a complete carcinogen. This means it both causes tumors to start and promotes the growth of those that already exist. The committee could not establish any safe level of intake for any of the six hormones now used to quickly fatten beef cattle in America.2

An official EU scientific panel released a comprehensive report confirming at least one of the six growth hormones contained in U.S. beef products causes cancer — beyond doubt.3 They further stated that all the banned hormones are thought to cause a variety of health problems or diseases… including cancer, developmental problems, immunological breakdown, brain disease, and others.

A critical point made by the EU report was that exposure to even small levels of hormone residue in meat and meat products carries some risk.

Drug abuse in the cattle industry

An estimated 90 percent4 of all beef slaughtered in the U.S. is loaded up with hormones before it goes to the butcher and onto your plate.

Today’s six most common hormones in the beef industry are estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, plus the synthetic hormones melengesterol, trenbolone or zeranol.

Producers place hormone-releasing pellets under a cow’s ear when it first enters the feedlot, and then again 50 days later. In another 50 days or less, it’s slaughtered.

Worse yet… injection into the muscle is a lucrative and common practice, although it’s against the law.

In the commercial cattle industry, the aim is to add as much weight to the animals as fast as possible. These hormones speed up weight gain and increase profits by $80 per cow. It takes less time for the cow to get fat enough for slaughter and the cow consumes less food along the way.

Conventionally raised beef calves grow from 80 pounds to 1,200 pounds in a period of just 14 months. Calves are fed or implanted with various drugs and hormones, grain and protein supplements… in order to, as the beef industry states, “promote efficient growth”.6

All approved implant products have a zero-day withdrawal… meaning the meat is considered safe to eat any time after the animal is treated.

    Here’s the rub, though…

Hormones are natural chemicals that control processes in your body. But they function optimally within a very small range of delicate balance. Any small imbalance of even a single hormone can lead to staggering health problems.

What the cattle eat is what you eat, too. You’re just the next step up on the food chain. And beware…

These hormones do not disappear when they

hit your plate — or your stomach

There are indications that these hormones don’t just disappear when they hit your plate — or your stomach.

So the questions you must ask yourself are…

If hormones are so “safe” why are there so many restrictions on medicating humans with hormones… while medicating cows with them is not only permissible but standard?

Furthermore, if high estrogen is so “safe”, then why is there such a strong link between excess estrogen and cancers of the breast and prostate?

It’s worth noting that the only USDA imposed requirement on safety of hormonal meat is that it be less than one percent of a child’s daily hormonal production.

Yet, a single ear implant of Synovex-S, a combination of estradiol and progesterone, spiked estradiol levels in various meat products up to 20-fold higher than normal.

Samuel Epstein, M.D., environmental cancer expert, states that an eight-year-old boy eating two hamburgers in one day would be exposed to enough estradiol to increase his body’s levels of the hormone by 10 percent.

It’s about like giving your children birth control pills.

And it gets worse. Due to their high hormone levels, cows are more likely to get sick with mastitis and other illnesses requiring antibiotics. So not only are you eating hormones, but you’re also ingesting high amounts of antibiotics. Irresponsible use of antibiotics has led to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a very serious threat.

Déjà vu…? Where have we seen this before?

Four decades after diethylstilbestrol (DES), a growth-enhancing animal feed additive, was first declared carcinogenic (1938), it was finally banned in 1979.

Why it took forty long years for a known carcinogen to be banned is beyond the scope of this article. But it should prompt us to be skeptical of the current notion that these six newer growth hormones are safe for us to eat day in and day out.

Immediately after banning DES, the meat industry switched to its current six carcinogenic additives — particularly the “natural” sex hormones estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone.

Epstein cites the link between spiking cancer rates and a lifetime of exposure to dangerous dietary residues from carcinogenic feed additives.

Deliberate poisoning and your likelihood of cancer

The abuse of these hormones has grown side by side with the rapidly escalating incidence of reproductive cancers in the U.S. Since 1950, there’s been a 55% increase for breast cancer, 120% for testicular cancer, and 190% for prostate cancer.7 (Full disclosure: Other reports cite different rates of increase in these cancers.)

Sex hormones elevate levels of IGF-1 (insulin growth factor-1) — linked to prostate, breast and colon cancer. A Washington University (St. Louis) 2006 study found that healthy vegetarian men have much lower IGF-1 levels than endurance athletes of the same weight who eat meat.8

The World Health Organization also warned that dietary factors account for at least 30 percent of all cancers in Western countries. And researchers found that people who avoid meat are much less likely to develop cancer. Large studies in England and Germany also confirmed that vegetarians were about 40% less likely to develop cancer.9

A 2004 study discovered that men with high IGF-1 have a 50% higher prostate cancer risk, and high IGF-1 women have a 65% higher breast cancer risk than women with lower IGF-1 levels.10

Moreover, American women have a stunning five-fold greater risk of breast cancer than do women in countries that ban hormonal beef.11

Mountains of evidence for a cancer connection

The Europeans, Japanese, and Australians have done a great deal of research and have labeled hormonal meat a definite carcinogen.

It’s been well established since the 1980’s that the cattle hormone estradiol causes gene damage and cancer in rodents which relates to breast and uterine cancer in women.12

Australian researcher Mike Waters, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, University of Queensland, published a review in the American journal Endocrinology in 2007, supporting the claims of consumers that meat injected with growth hormones could lead to cancer.

He cited numerous studies connecting cancer with the practice of eating growth-hormone-treated meat. Studies also find that inhibiting growth hormones helps “reduce both size and number of tumors.”

Here’s what to do if you don’t want
    to become a vegetarian

Since the government doesn’t seem to get it, take charge yourself. Switch to organic meat!

I believe that many people are not served well by vegetarianism, and need higher dietary protein levels. I favor moderate consumption of meat — and only hormone-free and antibiotic-free meat. There’s a theory of metabolic types — some people thrive on meat, others get sick on it. We’ll discuss this in a future issue. But even if you’re the metabolic type that needs high protein, you should eat only the healthy kind.

If you’re ready to make the switch to hormone-free, antibiotic-free meat, there’s good news! In response to consumer demand, organic livestock in the U.S. bolted from 18,513 in 1997… to 196,506 in 2005. Producers must show through solid documentation that meat has had no hormones or no antibiotics if they want to use “no hormone” or “no antibiotic” labels.

The organic label cannot be used if there are any hormones or antibiotics involved.

Hormone-free meat poses fewer health risks and is also better for the environment and animal health. Although it may be more expensive than conventional red meat, the price reflects its true production costs. It’s not a rip-off — it costs more to raise.

A couple of labeling tricks you should know about: For meat to be organic it must carry the organic label. Meats labeled “hormone-free”, “all-natural”, “grass fed” or “free range” may not necessarily be organic.

At the same time, “organic” animals are not necessarily free range or grass fed. Organic regulations only require that animals have access to the outdoors.

Your healthiest meat is that which is both free range and organic.

    Here’s a money-saving trick

If you can’t afford organic for every food you eat, choose the ones that give you the biggest benefit over conventional. Consumer Reports regards organic meat as one of those foods.

Here’s how to save on organic grass fed beef.

First, shop around, because prices on organic foods can vary greatly.

Even better… buy organic grass fed beef from a nearby farmer. This tends to be less expensive and also reduces your carbon footprint. As a bonus, the meat is much more fresh. Plus, you’re supporting local community businesses, and you can check out how it’s raised. I’m a big fan of farmer’s markets. I can’t swear the meat is always cheaper, but the other advantages outweigh the cost.

Check out these websites: www.localharvest.org and http://www.realmilk.com/where2.html for sources of organic, grass-fed beef in your area. There are also national providers who will ship to you, if you’re unsuccessful in finding something local.

If you can swing the upfront cost, consider getting a quarter, half, or whole cow butchered to your specifications, generally at less cost per pound. You do need a large freezer. But the savings from buying in bulk are considerable. Having a supply in your home will lessen emergency trips to the grocery store, as well as the temptation to patronize that place with the golden arches, and others like it.
