Chemotherapy is on its way out,
even in mainstream medicine

Of course, many cancer survivors have undergone chemo and radiation, but Dr. Weeks says they survived in spite of these toxic treatments, not because of them. “It’s not just me saying this,” he told the convention crowd. “It’s also the top researchers in oncology today who are saying this.”

Dr. Weeks declared, “The wrong question is ‘how to kill cancer tumor cells.’ The right question is ‘how to kill cancer stem cells.’”

He explained that tumor cells are like innocent bystanders at a riot. It’s the cancer stem cells that are the ring leaders, the agitators. Instead of killing the cancer stem cells, chemo and radiation stimulate them to be more numerous and more virulent. This explains why cancer comes back, even after conventional oncologists declare, “We got it all.” According to Dr. Weeks, “The stem cell is the lethal cell.”

Mainstream science is starting to see
chemotherapy is a mistake

The world’s leading cancer researchers increasingly recognize the danger of cancer stem cells and the futility of chemo and radiation in cancer treatment. He cited an article in Nature, the highly regarded international science journal, about the effect of chemo and radiation to selectively enrich the cancer stem cells.

“It’s like kicking a hornet’s nest,” said Dr. Weeks. He explained that an injured tumor sends out an S.O.S. signal to recruit stem cells, which can morph into any kind of cell. These stem cells then become cancer stem cells.

Dr. Weeks believes the Nature article should be the death knell for chemo. “Chemo and radiation don’t work. They never did work.” And he urged people who have cancer to “get tomorrow’s treatment today.”

Instead of chemo or radiation, the Nature article concludes that what’s needed is an anti-inflammatory treatment, such as the drug Celebrex, to shut down metastasis. Dr. Weeks agrees that anti-inflammatory treatment is the right approach.

Even though aspirin is effective against cancer because of its anti-inflammatory effect, he prefers natural anti-inflammatories over anti-inflammatory drugs because the latter have side effects. He advocates a natural product called Soul, which contains black cumin seed, black raspberry seed, and chardonnay grape seed. His clinic, the Weeks Clinic for Corrective Medicine and Psychology, sells this product.

Independent confirmation of
the power of black cumin seed

I was already familiar with the black cumin seed’s powerful anti-cancer effect. Several years ago I interviewed perhaps the world’s leading researcher on natural remedies for cancer, Dr. Adem Gunes, M.D., at a cancer clinic in Austria.

Dr. Gunes told me that black cumin has the most powerful effect of any plant remedy he tested on cancer cell lab cultures (in vitro). He had originally looked for a plant that could be used to enhance chemotherapy, but he was so impressed with black cumin, he said it could replace chemotherapy.

Additional proof of black cumin seed’s medicinal value came from the man who introduced Dr. Weeks to the Cancer Control Convention audience, Ed Griffin., the author of World Without Cancer.

Mr. Griffin was scheduled to give a speech at the convention but came down with a world-class case of shingles that made his life so miserable he cancelled his speech and expected to miss the event altogether. But on the recommendation of Dr. Weeks, Mr. Griffin started taking the black cumin seed-based Soul product to relieve his shingles, which is an inflammatory condition.

The results were so dramatic that Mr. Griffin changed his mind, attended the convention, and even introduced Dr. Weeks to thank him publicly for recommending the product that soothed his shingles so quickly!

Dr. Weeks said, “The future of cancer treatment is anti-inflammatories, like the product we gave Ed.”

Anti-inflammatories are so important in cancer treatment because they block or shut down the tumor’s S.O.S. signal that would otherwise recruit stem cells to become cancer stem cells. Other substances that attack cancer stem cells include quercetin, berberine, and vitamin D3.

Opioid pain medications are a dreadful mistake

As an aside, Dr. Weeks said it’s a big mistake for oncologists to give their patients an opioid pain medication. He said, “If your oncologist gives you opioids, he either doesn’t know that opioids suppress the immune system, or he has given up on you. Tell him to give you methadone instead.”

Dr. Weeks’s take-home message consisted of four questions he suggests you should ask your oncologist:

  1. Why aren’t you recommending any safe anti-inflammatory agents? (Some anti-inflammatories are dangerous. Too much aspirin, for example, will kill you. But there are safe options.)
  2. Why do you offer chemo patients candy and cake and all sorts of sweets and tell us “any calorie is a good calorie,” which flies in the face of biochemistry, considering that cancer loves sugar?
  3. What are you going to do to enhance my health while you’re killing my cancer cells?
  4. What are your recommended treatments going to do to my cancer stem cells?

Regarding the last question, Dr. Weeks said the oncologist will give you one of two looks. One is a “deer in the headlights” look that indicates the oncologist isn’t keeping up with the literature. The other look is one that says, “Darn it, I’m busted! Now you know the game.”

The game being – chemotherapy stimulates the creation of cancer stem cells, which are also called multi-drug-resistant cells.

Dr. Weeks quoted an elderly scientist who said, “In my lifetime oncologists will no longer use chemotherapy or radiation as the standard of care.” Dr. Weeks is convinced that this is happening because anti-inflammatories and immune-boosting therapies are “the wave of the future.” The revolution in cancer care, the new paradigm, is to treat the patient and not the cancer and to enhance vitality, nourishment, and a healthy state of mind.

Parasites can cause cancer – and they’re common

In her talk entitled “Guess What Came to Dinner,” another speaker, nutritional expert and author Ann Louise Gittleman, spoke about a hidden culprit that can cause cancer. Parasites are the hidden culprit, and she began her presentation by saying, “It’s time to open up a can of worms.”

Parasites are more common than we would like to think; she said eight out of ten Americans may have one or more parasites. She cited a 1978 study that found that one in six Americans had parasites, and she said that the rate of infection or infestation is on the rise.

Ms. Gittleman noted that quite a few school children appear to have “ants in their pants,” and this might be literally true in many cases. Pin worms could well be the culprit.

How easy is it to pick up pin worms and other parasites? Ms. Gittleman told the audience about a family of Hasidic Jews in which everyone in the family began to suffer seizures. A brain scan revealed that pork tape worms in their brains were causing the seizures!

You’re probably wondering how that’s even possible, considering that Kosher dietary laws strictly forbid pork, and Hasidic Jews observe these laws to the letter. The explanation is that this family had a cook from Central America who was a carrier of the parasite.

Why have parasites become such a problem? In Ms. Gittleman’s view, one reason is that we’ve become deficient in digestive enzymes, which are our first line of defense against parasites. Parasites can cause leaky gut syndrome, autoimmune disease, cancer, weight problems, chronic fatigue, migraines, asthma, ADD, ADHD, and sleep problems. Parasites can masquerade as other diseases and can be difficult to diagnose.

Ms. Gittleman urged the audience to do a parasite cleanse once or twice a year. She said it takes a month or two to do a proper cleanse for parasites because you want to kill not only the adult organisms but also the eggs and larvae. She recommends vitamin A and zinc as powerful protection against parasites and also mentioned raw pumpkin seeds, mugwort tea, and peppermint tea.

She likes to put a tablespoon of diatomaceous earth into her daily smoothie. If any worms or worm eggs are present in the intestinal tract, the diatomaceous earth will kill them without harming healthy tissue.

To aid digestion she recommended hydrochloric acid, which is also good against fungus and parasites including all different kinds of worms. The lack of hydrochloric acid – basically, stomach acid — explains why parasites have become so common, she said. Hydrochloric acid can be taken as an inexpensive nutritional supplement.

How to avoid parasites

Ms. Gittleman offered several suggestions for avoiding parasites.

  • Get a good home water filter. It’s possible to pick up parasites from tap water, as has happened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Flint, Michigan. Drinking properly filtered water can prevent infection.
  • Avoid salad bars.
  • Avoid raw, rare, or undercooked meat or fish.
  • Don’t rely on a microwave oven to kill parasites. (Microwave ovens don’t necessarily cook food thoroughly.)
  • Wash hands after handling pets.
  • Cook with onions, garlic, fennel, cloves, and thyme.
  • Wash produce thoroughly.
  • In addition to doing a parasite cleanse once or twice a year, do a colon cleanse.

By taking the right precautions, Ms. Gittleman said, “I hope we’ll all be able to say ‘adios, amigos’ and ‘adios amoebas’ forever!”

The power of the mind to heal

Author Annie Brandt, the founder of Best Answer for Cancer, once had a flu-like syndrome that kept her in bed for 22 hours per day. She was spending $600 a month to co-pay for prescription drugs that weren’t working.

Diagnosed with immune deficiency and M.S., she started to consider suicide. She heard a voice and was convinced that someone had broken into the house. But there was no one else in the house. The voice said, “I love you and won’t let anything bad happen to you.” She changed her mind about suicide, changed her diet, and gained an additional two hours per day when she had enough energy to be up and around.

When she was later diagnosed with breast cancer and given “three months to live,” she heard the same voice with the same reassuring message of love and safety. She made even more changes in her diet and focused on spirituality, lifestyle balance, and detoxification. In addition, she harnessed the healing power of pets, hugs, and laughter. She enjoyed watching “I Love Lucy” reruns.

Simple way to identify food allergies

Dr. Doris Rapp, M.D., gave the audience a simple and effective plan to find out if you’ve got food allergies. If you feel good in the morning, make a list of what you did the day before — especially what you ate. Keep that as the “good” list. If you feel bad in the morning, do the same to create a “bad” list. If the same items keep appearing on your “bad” list, eliminate them from your diet.

She also gave this tip: “If someone has a reaction to food, take a teaspoon of baking soda immediately. It can help.” Another tip: “If someone is allergic to milk, and you put a drop of milk on the patient’s arm, there will be symptoms. But if you put a dilution of milk on the patient’s arm, the symptoms will clear up. The patient will be able to consume it without problems by taking the dilution before consuming the food. Food allergies are easy to treat if you know what you’re doing.” Dr. Rapp has written several books.

Dr. Antonio Jimenez, M.D., is an American doctor at one of the top cancer clinics in Tijuana, and one of our most highly recommended alternative cancer doctors. He spoke on “Sono-Photo Dynamic Therapy and Hyperthermia.”

Dr. Jimenez reiterated what other speakers said about the futility of chemo and radiation to poison cancer. “Cancer cells are intelligent, not stupid,” he told the attendees. “They recruit healthy cells to make tumors larger, and they hide from the immune system. But cancer isn’t a death sentence.”

Dr. Jimenez uses Sono-Photo Dynamic therapy (specialized forms of sound and light) to directly kill tumor cells through programmed cell death and/or necrosis. In addition, this therapy damages blood flow to tumor cells and recruits and activates immune cells. He also employs hyperthermia (heat therapy) to weaken or kill cancer cells. As readers of this newsletter know, we are strong advocates of hyperthermia.

Two buzzwords today are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. There’s a good reason for that. Both free radical generation and inflammatory processes within the body are connected to almost every chronic condition.

You can mop up free radicals (oxidants) and combat inflammation with good diet, lifestyle and supplement choices. These are vital if you want to reduce the risk of cancer and other degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.

When you combat excess oxidation (oxidative stress) from free radicals, you also fight inflammation and vice versa. Both are intimately connected.

The danger of low-grade inflammation

While inflammation is a normal and necessary process, chronic low-grade inflammation is not. It’s a sign that something is wrong. It’s being stimulated somewhere in the body by a disease-causing microbe, an irritant or by damaged cells. To protect itself and remove the stimulus, the immune system triggers an ongoing, damaging, inflammatory response.

Sorry to say, this type of inflammation can be going on in the body without us feeling it or knowing about it, which makes it especially hazardous.

Since DNA repair is known to require large amounts of energy, scientists have suggested that the body will shelve this activity to handle the inflammation. Dealing with a short-term trauma is one thing, but in a chronic situation – constant inflammation — the body could become vulnerable to cancer.

Which brings us back to Dr. Agus.

The cancer doctor’s offbeat recommendation makes a serious point. Wearing uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes can cause constant irritation. Considering that four out of five adults are believed to have some kind of foot problem, finding comfortable shoes to avoid this concern is not easy.

Although he particularly had women’s stilettos in mind, the recommendation also applies to men’s high platform shoes and anyone wearing uncomfortable shoes of any kind.

Such footwear can cause inflammation in the toes, balls of the feet, or heels. The impact can travel up the leg to cause problems in the ankles, knees, and lower back muscles.

Heels over three inches do more damage by tilting the body forward. Leaning back to compensate can put the pelvis out of alignment and compress the spine. These effects will have implications for the whole body.

Dr. Agus describes cancer as a sleeping giant lying dormant in all of us. Why weaken our defense mechanisms and hinder our own internal cancer-fighting abilities by causing unnecessary problems?

The damage caused by footwear is no laughing matter. Sick leave in the UK caused by conditions created by ill-fitting shoes is believed to cost business £260 million pounds ($340m) annually. In the United States the figure likely exceeds a billion dollars. The truth is, nobody knows the medical costs, but they could be huge.

Inflammation causes cancer

There is no question that inflammation causes cancer.

Irritants such as smoking, acid reflux, or stone formation cause inflammation-induced lung, esophageal and kidney cancer respectively. Inflammation caused by bacteria or viruses can lead to cancers of the stomach, bladder, liver, cervix and lymph. Inflammation within the intestines can lead to colon cancer.

Obesity and repeated blows to the body also cause inflammation. So it’s no surprise that National Football League players, whose average weight is 248 pounds, have a shorter life expectancy. Overweight players are twice as likely to die of degenerative conditions before the age of 50.

Some people diagnosed with cancer are able to see a plausible link between the cancer and an old injury to the same body part that occurred years ago. For instance, one person with a bone tumor in his left femur cast his mind back nearly 40 years. He had suffered a bad accident as a young child that damaged the same leg. This is unlikely to be just a coincidence.

It’s the reason why boys with an undescended testicle during the first years of life have a 40-fold increased risk of testicular cancer as an adult.

Take aspirin?

So how can we lower our risk of chronic inflammation?

Professor Peter Elwood of Cardiff University, Wales, believes everyone over 50 should consider taking one tiny 75 mg tablet of aspirin each day because of the medicine’s powerful anti-inflammatory and health-protecting properties.

I’m not enthusiastic about this idea. Long-term aspirin use has extremely dangerous side effects. But consider the benefits of taking this anti-inflammatory.

Two studies published in the Lancet in 2011 and 2012 support Dr. Elwood’s view. After five years of daily intake, death from gastrointestinal cancers fell by 54%. After 20 years, prostate cancer deaths decreased by 10%, lung cancers in non-smokers by 30%, colorectal cancer by 40% and esophageal cancer by 60%.

Older people benefited more than younger, with the ideal candidates being in their late 40s.

The reason professor Elwood’s advice is not standard is that aspirin can cause stomach bleeding and ulcers. Each year, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause 107,000 hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths in American arthritis patients alone.

Of course they are taking much larger doses than 75 mg, but why take the risk?

Peter Sever, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Imperial College London, believes the risks of taking a daily aspirin outweigh its benefits, even for people at moderately increased risk of heart disease. He does not, and would not take it himself.

Natural remedies to the rescue

We can safely leave aspirin on the pharmacy shelves because there are many natural remedies that can fight inflammation and oxidation. The top seven supplements are the following, according to medical researcher and epidemiologist Vijaya Nair, M.D.:

Cultured soy. Steeping soybeans in microbial cultures transforms an undesirable and unhealthy product (the kind most Americans eat) into a fabulously digestible and nutritious food that’s popular in Asia. Examples are natto, miso, shoyo and tempeh.

Its two most powerful anti-cancer constituents are genistein and daidzein. However cultured soy contains numerous other cancer-fighting constituents that work synergistically.

Curcumin. Derived from the spice, turmeric, it’s a powerful natural anti-inflammatory and interferes with multiple cell-signaling pathways that cancers use to survive, grow and spread. It’s been reported effective against many forms of cancer.

Resveratrol. Best known for its effects on the heart, lab research shows this powerful antioxidant can prevent and kill many different types of tumor.

Ginger. This spice contains many antioxidants and fights pathogens. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to induce cancer cells to commit suicide.

Lutein. This carotenoid is best known for its eye benefits but also aids in the repair and prevention of DNA damage. Lutein also inhibits angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels to feed cancer) and encourages tumors to self-destruct.

Ashwaghanda. Popular in traditional Indian medicine, this herb inhibits tumor growth and angiogenesis. In the lab it’s shown powerful effects against breast, lung, colon, stomach and skin cancer.

Green tea. Benefits of this tea come from its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties. According to Vijaya Nair, “Study after study reveals green tea is a modern panacea that may protect against debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, heart disease and cancer.”

My own list of natural anti-inflammatories would also include proteolytic enzymes, fish oil, boswellia and silybin (available in an excellent supplement from our sister company, Green Valley Natural Solutions), and black seed or black cumin oil.

Keep moving

Researchers from University College London reported that people who spend more than four hours a day sitting in front of a TV or computer had twice the blood levels of C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, compared to those that spend less than two hours.

Keeping your body physically active creates lots of anti-inflammatory action. So make sure you get away from the screen now and again and move your body.

Better still, go for a good walk each day.

But if you do, please wear comfortable shoes!
