Several years ago, Rick Schiff, a sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department, shared the tragic story of his four-year-old daughter Chrissie.
Chrissie, an identical twin, was diagnosed with a very serious and rare form of brain cancer. Doctors prescribed the usual course of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. But her prescription turned out to be her death sentence.
Rick stated in an interview that six months into the treatment, Chrissie “was a fried wretched little child, emaciated, unable to process nutrients, had shingles, [and] had suffered immeasurably.”
The family fought to see Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, who develops gene-specific treatment for cancer. The treatment uses cancer-fighting peptides called antineoplastons. These peptides target specific cancer cells, rather than radiating the entire body.
Under Dr. Burzynski’s alternative treatment, Chrissie’s tumor shrank and eventually disappeared.
However, her side effects from chemotherapy and radiation kept getting worse. After a year of living cancer-free, Chrissie passed away.
Rick says both the oncologist and radiologist confirmed that the damage to Chrissie’s body was not caused by her cancer. It was caused by the chemotherapy and radiation.2
Don’t let this dreadful tragedy
happen to you
Medical mistakes make already-risky treatments even worse. And these happen far more often than you’d like to believe. For example:
- In 2009, a Philadelphia hospital gave the wrong radiation dose to more than 90 patients with prostate cancer.
- In 2005, a Florida hospital programmed its linear accelerator incorrectly and gave 77 brain cancer patients 50 percent more radiation than prescribed.3
- A large West Virginia hospital seriously over-radiated patients undergoing CT scans for more than a year after similar episodes prompted federal officials to alert hospitals to be especially careful with these scans.
- A major Brooklyn hospital claimed to have stopped over-radiating premature babies. But years later the New York Times revealed that these errors were still occurring, saying 27 infants had been over-radiated without proper shielding. And some were over-radiated multiple times.
Though advancements in radiation technology may seem like a good thing, they actually create more ways to harm you.
Software flaws, faulty programming, poor safety procedures, or inadequate staffing or training provide new opportunities for serious mistakes.4
And don’t kid yourself… these errors can be deadly.
The extent of the problem is not known because such accidents are underreported. Some states don’t require them to be reported at all.
Radiation harms your brain
Even when the technology AND the technicians perform as intended, radiation does permanent damage:
Radiation kills brain function
Researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston studied 213 brain cancer patients from 2002-2013. Some received surgery, followed by whole brain radiation. Others received surgery without radiation.5
In whole brain radiation, your brain gets bombarded with toxic radiation for 20 minutes every day for two weeks. The cumulative amount of radiation is staggering.
Three months later, 92 percent of the patients who received whole brain radiation showed reduced perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning (compared to 62 percent of patients who only had surgery).
The irradiated patients had a harder time recalling words and struggled more with verbal communication.
To make matters worse, these patients suffered headaches, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, extreme tiredness, hearing loss, and seizures.
You’d think for all that, they’d at least have less cancer than the other group. But you’d be wrong.
Radiation did absolutely nothing to improve their survival rate.
In fact, patients who underwent both treatments lived (on average) three months LESS than did patients who just had surgery.6 Following the study, Paul Brown, professor of radiation oncology at MD Anderson, said:
“The potential benefits of whole brain radiation therapy are far outweighed by the detriments of the therapy itself.7 The negative impact on cognitive function was more than I would have expected.” [Emphasis mine.]
Radiation wallops your pituitary
Another study done by Dr. Kyriakakis at the Leeds Cancer Centre Department of Endocrinology in the UK discovered that radiation damages your pituitary gland.
The pituitary gland is a small, bean-shaped gland at the base of your brain. It controls growth and development and produces important hormones.
In his study, Dr. Kyriakakis tested 107 adult brain tumor survivors for eight years. All the patients had received brain radiation therapy.8 Almost half of the patients — 47.7 percent — lacked multiple hormones that are secreted by the pituitary gland.
Pituitary hormone deficiencies almost doubled two to seven years following radiation. These deficiencies, called hypopituitarism, can cause dwarfism in children and premature aging in adults.
Radiation pummels your IQ
While chemotherapy and radiation might reduce or eliminate brain cancer (I’m being generous here), the treatment permanently reduces cognitive ability, at least in children.
A study of 54 survivors of childhood brain cancer found serious long-term effects.9
Using a combination of MRI scans and IQ tests, researchers found that radiation and chemotherapy lowered IQ levels. The “treatments” disturbed white matter in their brains, slowing signaling between the different parts of their brains and disrupting ability to reason.
PLEASE NOTE: You don’t have to be a cancer patient to get damaged with radiation. With technologies like CT scans and MRI scans being employed more and more frequently — and covered by insurance, to boot — you will likely be exposed to seven times more cancer-causing radiation during your lifetime than your parents.
It seems like radiation is everywhere (think: your dentist always wants more new x-rays and so does your chiropractor). As for cancer, more than half of all patients get radiation therapy.10
Triggers a 30-fold increase in cancer cells
The standard cancer treatments — namely radiation and chemotherapy — can cause the very disease they’re supposed to treat. Both are carcinogenic. They damage your DNA and cause mutations… which we know leads to cancer.11
Radiotherapy is known to bring on secondary cancers.
For example, a woman treated for breast cancer with radiation has a higher risk for developing lung cancer. And the secondary cancer may actually prove more malignant and harder to treat.
Studies show that radiotherapy increases the survival and growth rate of breast cancer cells 30 times over.12 Radiation may reduce a tumor’s size, but it kills the weaker, more benign cells and leaves the strong, more aggressive cells ready to explode.
This is a well-known feature of conventional cancer treatments: They simply breed stronger cancer cells. They kill the weaker cancer cells while the cancer stem cells – which are highly resistant to chemo drugs — survive. And the cancer comes back, less treatable than ever.
There is little doubt in my mind that most people, for most cancers, will be better off seeking the kind of alternative and integrative treatments we explore in these pages and in the books and reports we publish. For late-stage cancer, conventional treatments are a waste of time and money. Go straight to alternatives.
For early-stage cancers (some types, anyway, like breast and prostate), conventional treatments have a better track record. I still would try alternatives first (and did, when I was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer).
But most people are in a panic immediately after they get a cancer diagnosis and do what their doctors tell them.
