Want to Make Health Care Choices for Your Child?
The Government Says You’re Insane!

“You are considered sane till you disagree with the doctor.”

Disagreeing with the doctor can be deemed reason enough for the authorities to take away some of your rights as a parent.

It’s important for you to know this if you want to make health choices for your child, as opposed to having the conventional wisdom forced down your throat.

And make no mistake… This is as important for grandparents and the public as it is for parents.

There’s been a rash of high profile cases where parents refuse chemotherapy for their child. And other cases of parents who consider refusing, but knuckle under and then lose their child.

  • In 2003, Parker Jensen was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at age 12. Doctors prescribed chemo. His parents refused, questioning whether the diagnosis was even accurate, and viewing the treatment as worse than the disease.Child protective services sought a court order to force chemo. The family fled the state. Public outrage ensued and state laws to protect parental rights were proposed.Parker never received chemo. A decade later he does not have cancer.
  • In 2013, an 11-year-old Ohio girl was diagnosed with leukemia. She began chemotherapy, but stopped when it made her illness worse.Hospital officials fought the family, and appealed the case till they won. A court awarded custody of the girl to the attorney representing the Akron Children’s Hospital. The family fled the U.S. and treated their child with natural methods. They now report that she’s cancer-free and able to run 10 mph on a treadmill for 15 minutes at a time. Still, the hospital insists that if they return, they’ll force chemo on the girl.

Parents face a chilling choice

In both of these cases, the medical establishment decreed the patient was in imminent danger of death if not treated with chemotherapy. Also in both cases, the media portrayed the family as believers in quack medicine.

Unfortunately, these aren’t isolated cases.

These families’ terrible experience begs the question:

Must U.S. citizens with a minor child flee the country if they want to make their own medical choices? If your child is suffering beyond what you think is necessary, and you want to pursue less extreme medical measures, what can you do?

Too often, the medical establishment defines choosing alternative therapies as child abuse.

Yet the Oxford English Dictionary defines child abuse as “maltreatment of a child, esp. by beating, sexual interference, or neglect.” In the cases of Parker Jensen and the Ohio girl, these elements were clearly lacking.

In fact, the parents were trying to save their child from what they saw as intentional harm.

Given the vice-grip that conventional medicine has on cancer care — and the sharp rise in childhood cancers — prevention is a parent’s first line of defense. Avoid having to make the choice between submitting to a doctor’s orders or becoming a fugitive on the run from the law.

Some sad truths about childhood cancer

Americans today are obsessed with their children’s safety. From wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle to rubber-padded playgrounds to talk about outlawing football, this generation of children strikes me as very protected.
But this extreme aversion to risk doesn’t translate into prevention of the disease most likely to kill a child.i

Childhood cancer now strikes 9,000 kids under the age of 15 every year, and kills 1,500. The numbers are small compared to the whole population, but they’re shocking when you consider that cancer is mostly a disease of old age – a disease of bodies that are worn out and have compromised immune systems.

What’s worse, the incidence of childhood cancer is rising dramatically. From 1975 to 2000, it rose by 26%.ii By type of cancer:

  • Childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia – up 62%
  • Brain cancer – up 50%
  • Kidney cancer – up 48%
  • Bone cancer – up 40%

And how old are these little ones when first diagnosed? Their median age is six.

Steps you can take to protect
a child from cancer

There’s irrefutable evidence that exposure to certain substances can lead to childhood cancer. So despite the medical establishment’s silence on the issue, make prevention your priority.

Children’s small size, low weight, and fast metabolism makes them far more vulnerable to carcinogens than adults. Add to that the fact that they touch everything and then put their hands in their mouths.

New carcinogens are being created faster than the EPA or anyone else can keep up with. There are so many toxins in our society, you can’t protect your child from every threat, so pick the biggest battles, and win them.

Avoidable carcinogens fall into these categories:

  1. Domestic & Household – food additives, GMO foods, sugar, toys, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, paints, furniture, cell phones, pesticides…
  2. Environmental – pesticides in water, food, playgrounds, schools and urban spraying…
  3. Medical – Ritalin (see Issue # 393), other medications, procedures like CT scans and X-rays

Because toxins and toxic load are cumulative – i.e. toxins tend to build up in the body — your family’s goal is to minimize these invisible enemies – and live clean, natural and organic lives as much as possible.

Here are some specifics – and please note! These tips help protect us adults from cancer, too. They’re not just for children.

Priority #1: How to avoid hazmats on the home front

Home is where the heart is. It’s also where a slew of toxins are.

Your child spends more time there than anywhere. You can exert more control there. So let’s see how to protect them in:

  • Food and drink
  • Toys
  • Personal care products
  • Cleaning products
  • Furniture, carpeting, paint and other household decorations
  • Cell phones
  • Pesticides

You can’t eradicate every toxin. Don’t even try; it’ll make you crazy. But here are a few things you can do that will have a big impact. . .

Got milk? Beware…

In the rest of the world, most kids quit milk once they’re weaned. That could be smart, given the hidden carcinogens contained in conventional cow’s milk.

So go organic. It’s chemically and nutritionally superior and far safer than milk from cows injected with rBGH, a highly potent genetically engineered version of BGH (bovine growth hormone).

rBGH milk is loaded with IGF-1, which many studies link to cancer. IGF-1 also blocks natural apoptosis (death of cancer cells).

Dozens of countries ban rBGH milk for safety concerns. You should, too.

This popular food isn’t any safer…

Conventionally raised U.S. beef is heavily laden with growth hormones – also linked to childhood cancers.

Conventional farmers implant hormonal pellets under the ear skin twice during the 100 days before slaughter, to fatten animals and feedlot profits.

Hormonal residues following a single implant soar to 20 times normal levels.

Why not return to beef raised the old-fashioned way – chomping on plain old grass? The way it’s been done since time immemorial.

And avoid these food hazards, too…

  1. Sugar. It feeds cancer. So do grains. As I’ve said many times, sugar is addictive. It may be hard for a child to suddenly quit, but at least cut back gradually and introduce him or her to other tasty foods.
  2. Nitrite-dyed hot dogs and sandwich meats are linked to brain cancer and leukemia in children, even when eaten during pregnancy.iii
  3. Non-organic fruits and vegetables – even those in baby food – are generally tainted with carcinogenic pesticides linked to both childhood and adult cancers.
  4. Artificial colors (anything beginning with FD&C…), chemical preservatives (for instance, sodium benzoate which is toxic to cells and DNA), artificial sweeteners like aspartame, monosodium glutamate (MSG), Olestra, etc.
  5. Conventional corn and soy – 90% of which is genetically modified, linked to cancer and toxic to human organs.

Stick to real foods, carry a cooler, and save your child.

Clean and new may really mean
dirty and dangerous

The Environmental Working Group suggests trading dangerous household cleaners for nontoxic products or do-it-yourself mixes. It’s easier than you think. And to get some idea of why you should bother, see Issue #133 on laundry detergents. You’ll be happy to look for another way.

Be very mindful when you purchase home furnishings — especially big ticket items you expect to keep for decades, including carpets and drapes.

Kids love to jump on couches, crawl on carpeting, and hide in drapes. Go as natural as possible. Consider hardwood, tile, safe area rugs, non-toxic couches…

Pay particular attention to the bed, mattress, and sheets your child sleeps in. He spends 8 to 12 hours a day snuggled up in it. It’s challenging to find natural mattresses, but they exist. And as I said above, this advice goes for adults, too, not just for children.

Just which pests were you trying to kill?

Pesticides are strongly linked to childhood cancers, especially brain cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia.iv, v, vi, vii

Children of parents who use pesticides are TWICE as likely to get brain cancer, even if the use occurs two years before conception.

Consider non-toxic options for your dog’s flea collar and skip the sprays while you’re at it. Be on the lookout for city and school playgrounds and soccer fields that have been treated with pesticides or herbicides.

Get rid of household pests without chemicals… Seal cracks, and use a 50:50 vinegar-water mix at entry points to stop mate signaling. Try boric acid and diatomaceous earth (wear a mask).

Chemicals, chemicals everywhere

The stunning proliferation of chemicals in the marketplace extends to the toys that children are so apt to put in their mouths.

Only you can decide whether the potential health risk from possible BPA in plastic toys is worth it. (BPA is a toxic chemical used to make chemicals hard.) And be wary of toys from China, as lead paint has been a problem. I hope the toy makers who outsource production to Asia have learned to monitor quality control on what comes out of there. But I wouldn’t count on it.

Some parents opt for mostly classic, old-fashioned toys made with natural hardwoods.

Looking good may be bad for baby

Mom’s favorite cosmetics can hide a dizzying array of chemicals that may be toxic to her unborn child.

More than 287 toxic chemicals have been found in the umbilical cords of newborns. The European Union has so far banned more than a thousand cosmetic ingredients suspected of damaging health. The U.S. has ditched just eight.

Maybe it’s time to face this music:

  • 60% of lipsticks contain lead, a proven neurotoxin.
  • Nail polishes – chemical cocktails linked to cancer.
  • Hair dye – linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia and bladder cancer. I would never dye my hair. Check out Issue #164 and you’ll see why.
  • Triclosan in anti-bacterial soap – forms chloroform gas, a carcinogen.
  • Shampoos – react with water to create formaldehyde and carcinogenic nitrosamines.
    • Until recently, even Johnson & Johnson’s iconic baby shampoo contained formaldehyde and 1,4 dioxane. Both are carcinogens.
    • In 2011, J&J said their “no more tears” shampoo would become “no more formaldehyde.” This year they announced they’d fulfilled that promise, though it’s unclear whether other toxins remain.
  • Lindane – a potent carcinogen found in anti-lice shampoos, is linked to major brain cancer risk.
  • Most sunscreens are loaded with carcinogens. Are you smearing them on your child?

You decide: Is it time to go more natural?

You can’t control every toxin known to man. There are far too many. But reducing cumulative exposure could make a life-saving difference.

It could save the life of a precious little one.

On a related subject – more relevant to us adults – it’s very important to avoid artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin. If you read the last issue, you know why. If you missed the article, it’s repeated here.
