Switched to a Low-Carb Diet

Keynote speaker Dr. Ralph Moss, Ph.D., spoke on “Ketogenic and Calorie Restricted Diets for Cancer.” A ketogenic diet (low carb, high fat) is a powerful tool against cancer, according to Dr. Moss, because cancer loves sugar. In the absence of sugar, the cancer is unsupported.
He cited seven patients who had the deadliest, fastest-growing kind of brain cancer: glioblastoma multiforme. Six of the seven treated with a ketogenic diet and the chemotherapy drug Avastin had a positive response.
Readers of this newsletter know that I’m an enthusiastic supporter of the ketogenic diet for cancer patients (without the chemo, of course).
The theory behind the ketogenic diet is based on the fact that healthy cells can live on a diet of fat. They need few, if any carbs. But cancer cells cannot live with glucose – i.e. blood sugar – which is the metabolic product of carbohydrates. As Dr. Moss explained, ketosis is a state that the body reaches in the absence of carbs due to fasting, famine, or choice.
Ketosis is an alternative way for the body to produce energy: a low carb diet converts protein into ketones that serve as an energy source. In the case of famine, a body in ketosis will consume muscle, resulting in “wasting syndrome.” But when someone chooses to go on a ketogenic eating plan, there’s no wasting syndrome, though the body will shed unwanted fat.
Breast Cancer Survivor was told: “You’ll be dead in a year”
Doctors didn’t give Wiltrude much hope when they diagnosed her with cancer in the year 2000. Wiltrude, a German psychologist, never thought cancer would happen to her. But it did. And it came as a big shock.
One doctor told her, “You’ll be dead in a year.” Late stage breast cancer is virtually incurable using conventional treatments. Even M.D.s admit it. They talk about “buying you more time.” (Don’t count on it. The evidence shows you’re better off doing nothing than chemo.)
When Wiltrude told her doctor she was going to try alternative treatments, he said, “You are committing suicide with what you’re doing.” But she was determined to find a way to beat her cancer.
Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, this European woman came across a book by my good friend Bill Henderson, one of the smartest and wisest people I know when it comes to cancer treatment.

When I ask him about some of the treatments that top alternative doctors use, Bill sort of shrugs and says, “They’re fine, but why bother? My treatment works, you can do it yourself, and it costs practically nothing.”
He’s coached thousands of cancer patients with all different types and stages of cancer. Most of the people who follow the detailed, specific plan in this Special Report get over their cancer and live for years.
“Almost any kind of cancer is reversible,” says Bill. “I never give up on anyone.”
Even better for diabetes than it is for cancer
“The disease par excellence related to sugar metabolism,” Dr. Moss said, “is diabetes. Overweight, obesity, and lack of exercise are associated with diabetes.”
Dr. Moss started on a ketogenic diet because of a personal health crisis and now consumes only about 25 to 30 grams of carbs a day. Some people on a ketogenic eating plan can handle double that amount of carbs: it depends on where they are on the diabetic spectrum.
Dr. Moss said, “Glucose circulating in your bloodstream is extremely dangerous. In 1985, when there were 30 million cases of diabetes worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) called it an epidemic. By 2005 there were 217 million diabetics, and the number of cases continues to mushroom!”
Americans must lose their “fat phobia”
Dr. Moss recommended The Big Fat Mistake, a book that won an award from the Wall Street Journal. The author is a food writer who interviewed 200 experts. He says that Americans suffer from an advanced case of fat phobia, which ironically has resulted in massive obesity.
“You can’t practice the ketogenic diet unless you overcome fat phobia. To do this properly, you have to have 70 percent of your diet as fat. You also have to be very active physically,” explained Dr. Moss.
He gave a great tip about how to maximize the benefit of the ketogenic diet: have all of your meals in a restricted time zone of no more than eight hours. For example, if you eat breakfast at 8:00 A.M., try to finish your third meal of the day by 4:00 P.M., and then close the kitchen and stay out of the refrigerator until the next morning. That lets your digestive system rest for 16 hours.
We’re more stuffed with carbs than a Strasbourg goose!
“The problem is,” Dr. Moss continued, “we’ve been stuffed with more carbs than a Strasbourg goose. Taco Bell is now even advocating a ‘4th meal’! This is part of carb addiction: Why aren’t three meals a day enough?”
Dr. Moss practices what he preaches. He’s down 40 pounds from his peak weight. He used to weigh 210, and now he’s down to a slim 170. But he didn’t diet for weight loss. The weight loss naturally happened when he changed his eating plan.
Dr. Moss revealed to the audience for the first time the story of his health crisis. Eight months earlier, while visiting Budapest, he found he couldn’t get enough water. He tried sparkling water and even resorted to drinking Coca-Cola. But nothing would quench his thirst. Furthermore, he frequently had to urinate — every hour on the hour. He was always looking for a bathroom.

His blood glucose was a shocking 390!
Last June 20th, he came back from Europe and took a urine test to see what was going on. He thought he probably had a urinary tract infection. He ordered some urine analysis sticks from Amazon.com. The indicators on the strip went from light green to dark green, indicating how much glucose is in the urine. Within three seconds, the indicator turned black, a color that wasn’t even on the scale!
He told the audience, “I came staggering out of the bathroom and told my wife, ‘I have diabetes!’” He went to the emergency room, and his blood glucose was an astounding 390!!! He’d been walking around as a fatal case of diabetes for quite some time.
He’d had shingles earlier in the year and was eating an unhealthy diet. Stress and pain caused his blood sugar to rise. One of his favorite high school teachers went blind and died of diabetes, and he’s seen people lose limbs to the disease. He made up his mind that this wasn’t going to happen to him: he wasn’t going to have this disease in his life!
He now eats only 30 grams of carbs a day
Dr. Moss immediately got on the “straight and narrow,” and hasn’t eaten more than 30 grams of carbs a day ever since. His next blood glucose reading dropped to 171. The following one was down to 140.
Within a week or two it was about 100 to 110. Now his fasting glucose is in the low 90s. After three weeks he went off Metformin – a frequently prescribed diabetes drug — and now he’s completely back to normal. Besides shedding unwanted weight, he feels great: “Everything is back to where it was 30 or 40 years ago.”
Although he said the ketogenic diet isn’t a cancer “cure,” spiking your blood sugar offers food to cancer. He says he wouldn’t go on the popular Mediterranean diet because fruits, even just a quarter cup of blueberries, raises his blood sugar by 39 points.
“All grains, all fruits, and all sugars raised my blood sugar dramatically — even ‘healthy’ grains had the same bad effects.” He urged his listeners not to become philosophically and religiously attached to a diet theory but to use an eating plan that works.

Qigong — an ideal, moderate form of exercise
The next speaker was Dr. George Love, a qigong master and doctor of oriental medicine licensed by the State of Florida as a primary care physician. There’s a reason why Ann Fonfa featires Dr. Love at her conferences year after year. He’s a true master of qigong, having learned it at the feet of an old Chinese master whose qigong tradition had been passed down from father to son for 14 generations.
When the communists made qigong illegal during the Cultural Revolution, his master was imprisoned and tortured every day for eight years. What enabled him to endure the daily torture was qigong. This master passed the torch to Dr. Love, who now holds the lineage as the teacher of Blue Dragon qigong. His qigong is the “real deal.”
After hearing Dr. Love’s presentation at last year’s Annie Appleseed conference, I was so impressed I bought his “Meridian Qigong” DVD on Amazon.com for $20. I’ve been doing his 14 Blue Dragon qigong exercises nearly every day, and I know of no better form of exercise for such a wide range of medical and health benefits including more flexibility and stress relief.
Some of these exercises are especially beneficial for cancer patients. Dr. Love recommends exercises #2 and #5 on the “Meridian Qigong” DVD for breast cancer, exercise #3 for colorectal and lung cancer, exercise #1 for lung cancer, and exercise #7 for prostate cancer.
Dr. Love’s presentation at the conference wasn’t a speech but rather a “get up out of your seats, and let’s do some qigong” experience that everyone enjoyed. No mat was needed. Unlike yoga, qigong is done on your feet. Dr. Love teaches qigong in Boca Raton, Florida.
Misusing our senses causes problems
The next speaker was Sangeeta Agarwal, a charismatic young registered nurse who spoke about the “Use of Ayurveda for Improving Quality of Life for Cancer Survivors.” She explained that “ayur” means life and “veda” means knowledge. Ayurveda is the knowledge needed to maintain or restore mind, body, and soul.
The body can easily get out of balance, she said, when we misuse the senses. For example, watching too much TV abuses the eyes. Eating too much food abuses the sense of taste. Listening to harsh sounds abuses the sense of hearing. Listen instead to healing, soothing sounds, she advised.
She urged to audience to listen to the voice of intuition: “Don’t ignore the voice that tells you what to do and not to do. Listen to it and heed it. Be in touch with your own body.”
She especially recommends yogic breathing — a method of deep breathing. She said, “Yogic breathing is a good way to connect with yourself. It helps with many of the symptoms. Breath is a powerful connection between your body and mind. Between the body and mind is breath. Breath is shallow when you’re angry. Take a deep breath, and it’s hard to remain angry.”
She added that it’s essential for cancer patients to do something for fun and relaxation every day without exception, even if it’s only for ten minutes, and once a week to take an hour or two to do something relaxing and fun.
Astounding benefits of medicinal mushrooms
Dr. Nalini Chikov, a doctor of oriental medicine, gave a talk on “Chinese Herbal Medicines that Transform the Tumor Microenvironment.” These medicines include medicinal mushrooms, such as reishi and cordyceps, which have an incredibly wide range of benefits for inflammation control, boosting the immune system, inhibiting tumors from forming a blood supply, and promoting apoptosis (natural cell death) in cancer cells.
These mushrooms also protect the liver and improve its function. In addition to mushrooms, she cited curcumin as a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer food.
Dr. Mark Rosenberg, M.D., who practices medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, gave an insightful talk about “Systemic Cancer Treatment: Time for a Paradigm Change.” The current paradigm — that is, the way most cancer doctors approach cancer today — assumes that every bit of the cancer must be cut out, burned out, poisoned out, or stamped out.
According to this paradigm, it’s “all or nothing.” Most cancer doctors believe you either stamp out the cancer completely and win the battle, or cancer wins the battle and the patient dies.
This paradigm is nonsense, said Dr. Rosenberg. The harsh, toxic treatments may even kill off every single cancer cell, but what does that matter if the treatments also kill off the patient?
What’s so bad about “stable disease”? Nothing!
That’s why Dr. Rosenberg proposes a different paradigm: Abandon the goal of “curing the cancer at all cost,” and instead aim to get the patient into a state of stable disease.
This goal is much more achievable. The state of stable disease enables the patient to live normally with an excellent quality of life. These patients look and feel healthy and may play golf or engage in other activities without any problem. You’d never know they have cancer, even though they may be practically full of it.
But cancer is almost irrelevant to their lives because it’s not doing anything — it’s in check and under control. That’s what meant by “stable disease.”
Less toxic treatments are needed to get a cancer patient out of danger and into a state of stable disease. Low dose chemo, natural therapies, and detoxification are usually enough to help the patient get the upper hand over cancer, which is all that’s needed to survive. Dr. Rosenberg’s new paradigm does make better sense than the current “winner take all” mentality that’s needlessly killing so many cancer patients.
Three simple steps every cancer patient should take!
If, God forbid, you’re ever diagnosed with cancer, where would you begin on the road to recovery? Ann Fonfa, the founder of the Annie Appleseed Project, has a resounding answer to that question. At her 9th annual Complementary and Alternative Medicine Conference for Cancer, held in West Palm Beach, Florida, Ann passed out index cards describing “3 Steps 4 Health.”
Step one: Eat one more fruit and one more vegetable every day. Step two: Take a walk around the room, the facility, the neighborhood. Step three: Take seven deep breaths before treatment and before bedtime. That’s something any cancer patient can do. What’s more, those three recommendations — eating better, exercising, and deep breathing — can help prevent cancer in the first place.
Ann said those three steps improve health, help people reduce medications, and reduce stress. The three steps make a big difference, but they’re only the first stage of the journey back to health. She encouraged the audience to place “3 Steps 4 Health” cards in the waiting rooms of medical offices — an excellent way to get life-saving info to patients who are waiting for their chemo or radiation treatments.
Cancer patients tell how they beat the disease
The Patient Panel is always a highlight of the Annie Appleseed conference. Moderator Julia Chiappetta just said no when her cancer doctor proposed a double mastectomy followed by radiation and chemo.
She said it’s necessary for cancer patients to have “total peace” about the treatment plan they choose. She declared, “If I had to pick one thing, I would pick vitamin B17,” which is more popularly known as laetrile.
In addition to eating apricot kernels, which are rich in laetrile, Julia drank lots of wheat grass juice, even though she can’t stand the taste of it. She said, “Outdoor grown wheatgrass is the only way to go.” She still drinks wheatgrass juice and gets her wheatgrass from Green Earth Organics in Toronto. She also takes Dr. Wong’s herbs, as does Ann Fonfa.
Panelist Ria Swift’s cancer doctors put her through the wringer — first a mastectomy and then six months of chemo hell: “They gave me everything they had. It was horrible.” She finally won her battle against cancer when she discovered natural therapies and stress management. But the most important thing, she said, was to get rid of negative emotions. According to Ria, “It’s all about the emotion!”
Panelist Tom Arguello found out he had testicular cancer just before his 37th birthday. He believes he brought his cancer on by his unhealthy lifestyle: he was addicted to sugary drinks and fast food, got little or no exercise, and didn’t drink water.
He said, “If you go to the Golden Arches as often as I did, you’ll end up at the Pearly Gates.” At the time of his diagnosis he was 50 pounds overweight, had fatty liver, high blood pressure, and high anxiety. He was a “ticking time bomb,” but receiving a cancer diagnosis changed everything!
The doctor was talking through his hat
Tom did have surgery, and against his better judgment he made an appointment for chemo. “I knew I’d made bad lifestyle choices, but I didn’t see how putting poison into my body would make it better.”
He discovered the doctor was talking through his hat when the doctor told his wife, “Make sure Tom eats, no matter what food he wants.” Tom thought, “What? He’s saying I should eat at McDonalds? How could he heal me if he believes that?”
He immediately fired the doctor and cancelled the chemo appointment! You would be surprised how many cancer patients turn to alternatives for exactly the same reason – a doctor who tells them what they eat doesn’t matter. Even poorly informed people can often see this is nonsense, and lose faith in their conventional doctor.
The transforming experience in Tom’s life happened when he went to Boulder, Colorado, and climbed a tall mountain. Right then and there, it came to him that cancer is a message and that he needed a complete transformation of his mind, body and spirit.
He then delved into research and overhauled his eating plan from top to bottom: no processed food or fast food, no sugary drinks, no meat, no dairy. He started drinking lots of vegetable juice and went on a raw plant-based diet that worked for him. He also makes a point of thinking of something he’s grateful for before he gets out of bed every morning.
Tom said, “You can program yourself subconsciously to heal with positivity, meditation, and prayer. Successful thoughts lead to success. Healthy thoughts lead to health.”
No doctor can see into the future!
Panelist Dolores Jacoby was a 20-year-old senior at Cornell when she was diagnosed with melanoma on her right upper arm. Her doctor made an incredibly insensitive and obtuse remark: “We’ll do the best we can, but this will kill you.”
This terrified her (no wonder). It took her years to stop living with that cruel pronouncement in her life. But she had faith that God would spare her.
Later Delores came down with cancer of the eye. Another doctor, who was cut from the same cloth as her previous one, gave her yet another death sentence. She didn’t accept it. She said, “No doctor has a crystal ball.”
Delores firmly believes in God and in the power of prayer — especially the Psalms. She has a daily reading plan that includes the Psalms, and she looked up the Psalm for the day after her eye surgery. It said, “I have healed you.” She took this to mean that the eye surgery would be successful, and she was completely at peace about it.
Cancer consultant and coach Andrea Brier gave a presentation on “Healthier Approaches to Conquering Cancer,” which included her own struggle with cancer. She endured three episodes of cancer. She was terrified the first time, scared the second time, and scared again the third time.
“Fear can do us in,” she told the group. She defined the word “fear” by its four letters, which stand for False Evidence Appearing Real. She pointed out the uselessness of worrying, which is like praying for what we don’t want to happen.
Fired for being a “bad” ( that is, good) patient
After being fired by her oncologist for non-cooperation (that is, for being a “bad,” non-compliant, questioning patient), Andrea heard a speech given by the late Dr. Walter Wainwright, who explained that Haelan, a fermented soy product, is a remedy for the tough cancers. She started taking it, and it supercharged her immune system, just as Dr. Wainwright had told her. He mentored her for seven years, enabling her to become a consultant.
Andrea strongly believes in social support, and urged the cancer sufferers in the audience to “play the cancer card” by asking friends for help.
