Chinese Herb Destroys Liver Cancer and More

Chinese Herb Destroys Liver Cancer and More about undefined

Liver cancer is the third-deadliest cancer in the world, and it’s also made the Top 10 list for most frequently diagnosed cancers in the U.S. Even worse, it’s hard to treat – and it’s on the rise.

That’s why it’s so significant that recent research found a compound that stops liver cancer in its tracks. Better yet, this compound appears to be useful not only on liver but on a variety of cancers. Here’s the story. . .

The Chinese have used berbamine for centuries to treat inflammation and related conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis. It’s a compound that comes from the barberry plant, an evergreen shrub found throughout the warmer continents of the world (except for Australia). The flowers are a golden yellow or orange, and the berries ripen to either a deep red or blue-black.

Berbamine-focused studies have surged during the past eight years, because findings repeatedly point to this compound’s health-creating benefits. Notably, researchers have found that not only does berbamine aid with healing liver cancer, but it also has cancer-killing effects on certain lung and stomach cancers. It also appears to help with blood cancers, certain skin cancers, and an aggressive (highly metastatic) type of breast cancer.

Though they don’t know exactly how it functions, researchers have found that adding berbamine to a group of cancer cells is the equivalent of tossing an “autodestruct” button into the mix -- because not only does berbamine prompt cancer cell death, it also stops the growth and migration of cancer cells into new tissues.

Destroys the source andboosts immune function

I’ll allow that a lot of the herbs and treatments I introduce you to are able to prompt cancer cell death. But what sets berbamine apart is its ability to limit the resistance of cancer cells to chemotherapy drugs.

As you may know, one of the many problems with chemo cocktails is that cancers are quick to mutate and become resistant to those drugs. As one round of chemo follows another, cancer cells completely quit responding to the standard drugs, which is why cancer too often returns after a patient has been told he’s free and clear. MDRs, or multi-drug-resistant cancer cells, survive every round of chemotherapy.

But with berbamine in the picture, multi-drug resistance goes down. In fact, researchers have even detected a synergistic effect when berbamine is used in conjunction with certain chemotherapy drugs.

Better still, berbamine destroys cancer stem cells, which is one of the major goals of current research and treatment. Stem cells are the major reason cancer often returns after surgery or the elimination of a tumor. It’s the stem cells that are able to mutate into a variety of types of cells, some of which are drug-resistant.

In another study, this time published in a 2013 issue of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, researchers found that berbamine and bbd24, one of its many derivatives, specifically block the growth of liver cancer cells and get in the way of malignant stem cells that often give rise to liver cancer.

Also worth noting is that Asian countries have been using berbamine for years to help fight chemo-induced leukopenia, a condition in which a patient’s white blood cell counts drop dramatically during chemotherapy treatments. This destruction of immune system cells is one of the reasons patients are rightly said to die of chemotherapy rather than cancer.

Berbamine also appears to help with neutropenia, which is a similar condition, this time where the level of neutrophils in the body is reduced as a result of chemo. Neutrophils are your body’s primary infection-fighting tool. When they are destroyed by chemotherapy, the patient is exposed to a high risk of infections. A 2011 study in the International Journal of Hematology presented findings of berbamine’s positive effect on neutrophils.

An up-and-comer in the
world of cancer treatment

Along with showing genuine promise for treating patients suffering from advanced liver disease, berbamine likely will go on to help advance the treatment of many other cancers.

The major downside at the moment is that this herbal remedy is not well-known or commonly used in the U.S. and Europe, though patients in Asia should be able to find practitioners who make use of berbamine.

For the most part, berbamine can be ordered online as a supplement in powder form. But, two comments of caution: For starters, don’t confuse berbamine with berberine, which is a similar chemical compound (and also has anti-cancer properties, for that matter).

Second, in spite of the fact that berbamine is so promising, it’s hard for me to urge this remedy on patients in Western countries because there’s no way to guarantee its safety or purity. Sad to say, Chinese purveryors of herbs and natural medicines have acquired a bad reputation.

So if you attempt to seek it out, be as picky and discriminating as possible (this would include not necessarily believing every testimonial you find on the Web). At best, you might try contacting a trusted practitioner in Asia.

Meanwhile, one of the keys to beating cancer is to avoid every toxin you can. In our last issue, we talked about a common one we all use almost every day -- and need to get rid of. If you missed the news, you can read it now just click here. . .
