It’s Not Just the Sugar
The other carcinogen in colas

Have you ever thought about where that rich brown color comes from in cola drinks like Coke and Pepsi? Given that almost nothing about soda is natural, you might well ask. Especially considering a U.S. consumer advocacy group claims the caramel coloring in soda pop causes cancer. Keep reading to find this new reason for avoiding sodas. . .

Breast Cancer Survivor was told: “You’ll be dead in a year”

(Pssst!! That was 12 years ago!)?

Doctors didn’t give Wiltrude much hope when they diagnosed her with cancer in the year 2000. Wiltrude, a German psychologist, never thought cancer would happen to her. But it did. And it came as a big shock.

One doctor told her, “You’ll be dead in a year.” Late stage breast cancer is virtually incurable using conventional treatments. Even M.D.s admit it. They talk about “buying you more time.” (Don’t count on it. The evidence shows you’re better off doing nothing than chemo.)

When Wiltrude told her doctor she was going to try alternative treatments, he said, “You are committing suicide with what you’re doing.” But she was determined to find a way to beat her cancer.

Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, this European woman came across a book by my good friend Bill Henderson, one of the smartest and wisest people I know when it comes to cancer treatment.

She tried Bill’s top, number one recommendation — a gentle treatment you can do at home for just $5.15 a day. What’s more, the cost goes down to $3.50 after six weeks because you just need a maintenance dose. And it even tastes good.

Not only has Wiltrude passed the five-year cancer survival mark, she’s survived for 12 years. We just interviewed her recently for this publication. The radiologist who tests her every year told her, “You’re the only one with this kind of result.”

You can find out more about Bill’s proven cancer treatment plan if you click here.

When I ask him about some of the treatments that top alternative doctors use, Bill sort of shrugs and says, “They’re fine, but why bother? My treatment works, you can do it yourself, and it costs practically nothing.”

He’s coached thousands of cancer patients with all different types and stages of cancer. Most of the people who follow the detailed, specific plan in this Special Report get over their cancer and live for years.

“Almost any kind of cancer is reversible,” says Bill. “I never give up on anyone.”

It seems the advocacy group, called the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), wants the FDA to ban all chemically-enhanced food coloring that gets injected into cola drinks. They say it creates carcinogens that lead to cancer.

Of course, the soft drink industry disputes these claims.

There are actually four types of caramel coloring recognized by federal regulations. Two of those are produced from a chemical reaction between sugar and ammonia, called Caramel III and Caramel IV. Caramel IV, also known as ammonia sulfite process caramel, is what you see in most colas. Caramel III is found in things like beer and soy sauce.

Two chemicals, called 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole (2-MI and 4-MI), are created during the chemical reaction it takes to make Caramel IV. According to animal studies by government researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s National Toxicology Program, these chemicals are proven to cause liver, lung, and thyroid cancer — but this has only been demonstrated in lab rats, and at high doses.

It’s the two ammonia-based coloring types — Caramel III and IV — that the CSPI wants banned, and it’s because they contain 4-MI. The CSPI also believes it’s misleading to call these chemicals “caramel coloring”. I have to agree. Whatever its sugary shortcomings may be, real caramel contains only natural ingredients. It’s just made from melted sugar and not other strange things you wouldn’t normally put in your body.

The way things are now, CSPI says the government’s regulations let consumers think they’re getting real caramel when they’re getting a product of the chemical industry.

In its place, the advocacy group thinks the terms “ammonia process caramel” or “ammonia sulfite process caramel” are more appropriate.

The state of California agrees with the CSPI. State health officials have added 4-MI to their list of substances “known to cause cancer.” The state wants to pass a proposition that requires cancer warning labels for foods with potentially cancer-causing substances if those foods contain more than a certain amount of those substances. For 4-MI, that level is 16 micrograms per person, per day. Consuming more 4-MI than that is projected to cause one excess case of cancer for every 100,000 people.

Yet, most colas have about 200 micrograms of 4-MI per 20-ounce bottle! Lots of folks drink more than that every day. So they’re drinking a carcinogen in big enough quantities to cause concern. And it’s a carcinogen that you might think is unnecessary since natural caramel should do just as well.

The Bigger Picture

Of course, nobody agrees about this. Coca-Cola Co. says the caramel coloring it uses does not cause cancer. The company added that their cola-coloring formula only has one of the compounds cited as a health danger.

On the other hand, a number of NIH scientists authored a letter to the FDA that speaks to the indecency of exposing people to potentially cancer-causing chemicals. They say it’s especially unethical in a beverage with no nutritional value in the first place. That would be colas.

If the scare about caramel coloring gets a few more people to stop drinking sodas, I’m all for it. But don’t let it distract you from the much bigger problem: sugar. Sugar is a deadly hazard to your health, and sodas contain massive amounts of it. Most non-diet sodas have at least ten teaspoons of sugar per can.

Cancer cells feast on sugar. If you have cancer and continue to eat sugar, you should ask yourself whether you really want to live bad enough to do something about it, because your behavior is killing you.

Diet sodas are no solution, because the artificial sweeteners are dangerous, too. See the details in Issue #104 at And of course diet colas all have the caramel chemicals, too.

High sugar consumption — NOT high fat consumption — is the main reason for the obesity epidemic in our country, and the whole slew of diseases that follow from it: stroke, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer and more.

Personally, I think the best solution is just to stay away from soda. Drink water. It actually tastes pretty good. And carbonated “bubbly” water tastes even better, especially on a hot day.

The last issue had some exciting news about a new cancer treatment — one that’s not only cheap but can also be done at home. If you missed it, scroll down and read it now.
